Abstract A solid-solution Li(Nb,Ta)O3 thin film optical waveguide was fabricated onto a y-plate LiTaO3 substrate by the epitaxial-growth-by-melting (E.G.M.) technique, in which single-crystal powder of Li(Nb0.75Ta0.25)O3 was used. The waveguide supported eight TM and six TE modes. Studies on optical waveguiding mode indices indicated that the refractive index distribution obeys well the Fermi function. The parameters of the Fermi function were determined, and their values are discussed on the basis of the LiNbO3-LiTaO3 pseudo-binary phase diagram.
