Organic Photochemistry, XIV. - Photoreactions of Sulfinyl-substituted Derivates of Carboxylic Acids, Thiocarboxylic Acids, and a Selenocarboxylic Acid in Solution; Light-induced Acid Cleavages, Formation of Heterocyclic Compounds, and PhotosubstitutionsIn a new solvent-dependent photoreaction in anhydrous benzene, the 2-sulfinyl-substituted aryl benzoates 1a-c, thiobenzoates 3a, b and the selenobenzoate 4 as well as the S-alkyl ester 18d give the corresponding 2-(methylthio)- or 2-(p-tolylthio)benzoic acid (2a or 2b), and in some cases the corresponding disulfides 7 or the diselenide 8. The same type of photo-reaction was also observed for the O- and S-aryl esters 24a and b of 2-sulfinyl-substituted cyclopentene-1-carboxylic acid and cyclopentene-1-carbothioic acid, respectively, in which sulfinyl and ester group, as in the aromatic carboxylic acid derivates 1, 3, 4, and 18d, are present in a fixed cis-arrangement. O- and S-aryl esters of linear, aliphatic carboxylic acids (e. g. 27a and b) as well as O-alkyl esters (e. g. 18a - c) and amides (e. g. 20 a - c) of aromatic carboxylic acids do not undergo this light-induced acid-cleavage; 18a -c and 20a -c are photodescoxygenated (formation of 15a-c) and 21a -c, respectively) or yield products by inter- and intramolecular aromatic photosubstitution of the methylsulfinyl group by hydrogen or phenyl (formation of 19a -c and 22b or 23c, respectively). In a competitive reaction of the photochemical acid cleavage, the investigated aryl esters 3a, 3b, 4, and 24b respectively of thio-and selenocarboxylic acids furnish, via novel aromatic and olefinic photosubstitution of the methylsulfinyl group by S- or Se-aryl, the thioxanthone 5a, 5b, the selenoxanthone 6, and for the first time by photochemical means a thiochromone (26). Furthermore. it was shown that the 2-(methylsulfinyl)phenoxy-, 2-(methylsulfinyl)anilino-, and 2-(methylsulfinyl)benzyloxy groups in 28a, 28b, or 31, respectively, are apparently not suited as photosensitive protective groups for carboxylic acids. Instead, photo-Fries reactions (formation of 29a -d), photo-deoxygenations (formation of 29a, b, 30a, and 33), and intermolecular, aromatic photo-substitutions of the methylsulfinyl group by hydrogen (formation of 30b and 32) are observed for these carboxylic acid derivates. The article describes the constitutional requirements for the investigated photochemical acid cleavages, due to neighboring group interactions between sulfinyl and ester functions under light-induced oxygen transfer and hydrogen abstraction. A possible reaction mechanism is discussed.
Notes:
