Notes: The authors studied the effect of ionizing radiations on hemagglutinating and mitogenic activity of purified phytohemagglutinin in solution. A dose of 10 Krad, is needed for 50% destruction of the agglutinating capacity; the mitogenic effect is more resistant: 70 Krad for 50% inactivation. The results indicate that the agglutinating and mitogenic effects are due to different structures. The radiation effect on agglutinating activity is an exponential function of the lectin concentration. Macromolecular changes, followed by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, were evident for doses high than 40 Krad. A dose up to 3 Mrad was ineffective to inactivate the hemagglutinin in kidney beans even with 30% or 60% water content.

Notes: Summary Early effects of parathyroid hormone (PTH) deficiency were studied in 12 patients with primary hyperparathyroidism due to single parathyroid adenoma by following the precise time course of changes in plasma calcium (Ca) and immunoreactive parathyroid hormone (iPTH) after parathyroid surgery and by prelabeling 2 patients with radiocalcium (Ca*). Surgical removal of the adenoma was immediately followed by a sudden increase in plasma Ca which preceded the usual fall. The increase in plasma Ca commenced simultaneously with the fall in iPTH and was accompanied by a parallel increase in specific activity (sp. act.) of plasma Ca*. Specific activity continued to rise for 2 h in both prelabeled patients, whereas blood calcium was already falling thereafter reaching a markedly low removal rate constant as long as plasma Ca decreased. When plasma Ca began to rise, sp. act. resumed a descending course. Our findings indicate that the initial hypercalemia depends on PTH withdrawal and results from a rapid flux into general extracellular fluid (ECF) of calcium coming from a compartment with higher sp. act., contained within the miscible pool, immediately followed by a reduction in calcium transfer from bone. These results suggest that acute PTH deficiency determines an outflow of calcium from bone cells and support the theory that PTH initiates its action by modifying their intracellular calcium content.

Notes: Abstract Qualitative and quantitative drift data were collected simultaneously above and below a pool both before and after the pool was heavily electrofished. These data revealed no significant difference between drift organism densities (#/m3) above or below the pool before or after fish collection. Qualitative and quantitative fish gut analyses suggest that the sunfishes Lepomis megalotis, L. macrochirus and L. cyanellus may be feeding on drifting invertebrates as these organisms comprised 58%, 37% and 35% gut volume, respectively. A design for a long-term drift net apparatus is presented.

Notes: Abstract This paper applies an interval arithmetic version of Newton's method to unidimensional problems in signomial programming. Unidimensional dual problems occur in engineering design problems formulated as a signomial program with a single degree of difficulty. Unidimensional primal problems are of interest, since many multidimensional search procedures involve unidimensional searches. The interval arithmetic method is guaranteed to generate all the local optima.

Notes: Abstract Signomial programs are a special type of nonlinear programming problems which are especially useful in engineering design. This paper applies interval arithmetic, a generalization of ordinary arithmetic, to a dual equilibrium problem in signomial programming. Two constructive applications are considered. Application I involves uniqueness of local solutions; Application II involves existence and error bounds.

Notes: Abstract The question of equity in the manuscript evaluation process is receiving greater attention—perhaps becuase of the increasing difficulty of publishing and an expanding interest in due process and equal treatment. Attention is usually focused on the relationship between contributors' characteristics (e.g., age, institutional affiliation) and the acceptance or rejection of a paper. Much less attention is given to question of equity in the process and procedures that lead to an editorial decision. This survey of journal editors reports data on several neglected procedural areas that may affect objective editorial judgments: “sponsored submissions,” “inside track submissions,” and back region communication. The findings suggest that editors are confronted by or involved in these procedural issues with some regularity. While additional empirical work is needed in these areas, the descriptive data we present help us to raise several critical issues and to begin a long overdue discussion of their ethical dimensions.

Notes: Abstract Image analysis by video systems is well established for medical applications, and its has been successfully used for the analysis of cineangiograms. In most instances the instrumentation used for this purpose has been characterised by relatively complex hardware set ups. Owing to the interest of this application, also in relation to the progressive growth of cardiac surgery and hence the need for anatomo-functional diagnosis, it seemed reasonable to consider the possibility of simplification and standardisation of the instrumentation, taking advantage of the software possibilities of a small digital computer and possible microprocessor implementation. The paper presents a minimum system capable of processing t.v. images, using an unexpensive computer interface and a general-purpose software package.
