Summary A simple two-step procedure for isolating polyaromatic hydrocarbons from whole smoke condensate has been devised. Preliminary separation of a blue fluorescent zone from whole smoke condensate by preparative thin-layer chromatography yields a crude polyaromatic hydrocarbon fraction. A highly enriched polyaromatic hydrocarbon fraction is obtained by passage through a short Sephadex LH-20/isopropanol column. The isolation procedure and a temperature-programmed gas chromatographic scan can be run in less than eight hours.
