Abstract The problem of a general static-charge distribution interacting with a parallel-plate capacitor is solved in a plasmon model, i.e. in the long-wavelength approximation. The relevant physical quantities (potential, electric field, polarisation, etc.) are decomposed into two parts with respect to surface and bulk plasmon contributions. The microscopic corrections due to the Landau damping enter through both surface and bulk plasmon cut-off wave vectors. Two problems are discussed in detail: the screening of a point charge and the properties of a charged capacitor (image potential, capacitance, etc.).
