Abstract Hot pressed solid solutions within the pseudoternary system TiO−TiN−TiC have been examined in relation to their physical properties. Following parameters have been measured: transverse rupture strength, hardness, density, thermal conductivity and resistance to scaling. The physical properties of the oxicarbonitrides improve with the decrease of the content of TiO up to the pure carbonitrides. Using the technique of hot-pressing, the density of samples having a high amount of oxygen could not be changed essentially. The thermal conductivity of the titanium-oxicarbonitrides lies between oxide-ceramics and hardmetals. They are resistant to scaling up to 600 °C, the increase of weight above temperatures of 900 °C is considerable.
