Notes: Abstract Let X be a Banach space, D⊂X, f: [0,∞)xD→X continuous and ω-periodic. In this paper we consider various conditions on D and f sufficient for existence of an ω-periodic solution of the differential equation u′=f(t,u). In the main, we shall assume that D is closed bounded and convex and f satisfies a boundary condition at δD such that D is flow invariant for u′=f(t,u). The map f is assumed to be either compact or dissipative or a certain perturbation of such maps.

Notes: Summary For the further clarification of the polymorphism of mouse-esterase and its hormonal control, which in part have not yet been fully comprehended, disc-electrophoretic analyses of eight organs were made, using a strain with the Tfm-mutation. In addition, quantitative assays of esterase activity as well as histochemical studies were performed. The individual organs are characterized by a specific banding pattern of esterase, which is essentially conditioned by the diverse activity of a limited number of bands. Partly these may be regarded as primary gene products, partly they seem to be secondary modifications. The few incidences of band-linkage justify the expectations, that further gene loci will be discovered. In four organs of Tfm-mutants a lower esterase activity was found than in the controls, which was especially distinct in the kidney. The behaviour of the testosterone-dependent bands in the kidneys of Tfm-mutants seems to indicate two different mechanisms of the effect of testesterone on these bands.

Notes: Summary Among the various esterases of the mouse kidney the Es-9 esterase is out-standing in that it is fully repressed in the cortical proximal tubulus in the absence of testosterone but is constitutive in the terminal parts of the proximal tubulus. Thus, this enzyme is regulated in a different way in closely neighboured sections of the tubular system. Comparing the disc electrophoretic patterns of the kidney esterases with the distribution of esterases in ultrathin sections as revealed by electron microscopy it is concluded that the Es-9 esterase is located in the mitochondria.

Notes: Summary A new method for the histochemical demonstration of mouse submandibular esterproteases has been developed. The substrate is N-acetyl-l-methionine α-naphthyl ester. The main enzyme reaction was found in the apical region of the secretory tubules with a marked sex difference as expected. First attempts were made to differentiate histochemically between the various esterproteolytic enzymes.

Notes: Summary The intracellular distribution of non specific esterases in various villous cells of mouse jejunum was investigated using two substrates, 8-acetoxiquinoline (Q-O-2) and 8-acetyl mercaptoquinoline (Q-S-2) respectively. With the more selectively staining Q-S-2 a uniform reaction was demonstrated in all enterocytes which was mainly located in the endoplasmic reticulum and the nuclear envelope. Possibly it is a matter of a single enzyme being hardly detachable from the membranes. With the non selectively staining Q-O-2 several esterases were demonstrated Es-2, and Es-9 among them. The main reaction was found in columnar and Goblet cells, in both at all cellular membranes and in the mitochondrial matrix, additionally in cisterns and vesicles of the endoplasmic reticulum and of the Golgi apparatus and at lipid droplets of the former, finally at mucous droplets of the latter. An extracellular reaction was found in the intercellular cleft and between the microvilli of the brush border.

Notes: Abstract 25Na (T1/2 = 60 sec) has been produced in a22Ne target by the (α,p) reaction and polarized by means of spin-exchange scattering with optically pumped87Rb. The asymmetry in the β decay of polarized nuclei served to detect rf transitions between hfs Zeeman levels of the atomic ground state, yielding spinI = 5/2 and hyperfine splitting ΔW= 2648.5(3.0) MHz, from which the magnetic moment μI = 3.683(4)nm (corrected for diamagnetism) was deduced.

Notes: Abstract A so far undescribed gene controlling zone III esterases has been detected by means of disc gel electrophoresis of kidney homogenates from the two inbred mice strains NMRI and SK/Cam. The gene is tentatively designated Es-9, and the two codominant alleles are designated Es-9 a and Es-9 b. Es-9 esterases are present in many tissues, but, unlike the other zone III esterase (controlled by Es-5), are not found in the serum. Close linkage with the Es-2 gene leads us to map the Es-9 gene on chromosome 8.

Notes: Synopsis The histochemical identification of individual esterases is a problem that has not yet been overcome. Inhibitors and different substrates reveal different patterns of distribution. 8-hydroxyquinoline acetate is a useful substrate in ultrahistochemistry. There is evidence of a relationship between esterase distribution and function.
