Notes: Summary 1. In the vicinity of an underwater substrate (e.g., a wall) certain fishes tend to maintain a body posture with their ventral sides oriented towards the substrate. 2. This paper gives the first comparative data on thisVentral Substrate Response (VSR). It furthermore extends the present concept of theVSR, which has so far only been studied with regard to body roll responses, by including observations ofVSRs about the pitch axis. The rollVSR was termedVSRr, theVSR with the head in an upward position was namedVSRpu, and theVSR with the head pointing downward was given the nameVSRpd. 3. In some species allVSR forms may show a high gain whereas in others the gain ofVSRpu andVSRpd can be high and the gain of theVSRr is low. The question is raised whether this finding suggests a possible independence of the mechanisms controllingVSRs about the roll andVSRs about the pitch axis. 4. In fish, that are shown to guide theirVSRs visually, unilateral enucleation does not abolish theVSR behavior, if the seeing eye looks towards the substrate. Binocular interaction is thus not essential for this response. Other observations of unilaterally blinded animals led to the discovery of a new domain of support for the hypothesis that theVSR mechanisms are independent of those guiding theDorsal Light Response: rolling tendencies towards the intact eye occuring when the fish are kept in an environment lacking visible objects cease if such objects are introduced into the test tank. The independence ofVSR andDorsal Light Response mechanisms is also demonstrated by the fact that unilaterally enucleated fish show aVSRr at all. 5. VSRpu andVSRpd were studied in the weakly electric fishEigenmannia sp. These experiments revealed that, as earlier shown for theVSRr alsoVSRpu andVSRpd may be guided by non-visual cues in certain species.

Notes: [Auszug] Many other 'burst' events have been reported in the litera-ture20"23 but are omitted here, since they meet neither the criteria of rise time nor recurrence. It is very likely, however, that some of the many events observed by the Los Alamos group20"22 were X-ray bursts of the kind discussed here. ...

Notes: Summary Mice were allowed to mate, gestate, deliver and rear their offspring for 3 successive generations while being continuously exposed to 60 Hz electric fields. Mice exposed to vertical electric fields exhibited decreased body weights at 35 days postpartum and increased mortality, rates for 3 successive generations. Mice exposed to horizontal electric fields exhibited decreased body weights for 2 successive generations.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Neutronenaktivierungsanalyse ist für die Bestimmung Seltener Erden in extraterrestrischen Materialien gut geeignet.
Notes: Abstract The detection limits in neutron activation analysis are up to the standards of extraterrestrical matter analysis. Instrumental analysis is possible only after a group separation of the rare earth elements. The measurements requires a 26 day decay period. If results are desired within a shorter time interval the individual rare earth elements have to be separated. Gas chromatography and electrophoresis were applied in this work. Gas chromatography of metal chelates using radioactive reagents with high specific activity significantly improves the detection limits. The gas-chromatographic separations, however, should be only regarded as model experiments. The experimental results were obtained much faster (within 12 h) by applying high voltage electrophoresis of rare earth elements. Because of the excellent separation, the rare earth elements can be determined by automatic β-liquid scintillation spectrometry with high counting yields.

Description / Table of Contents: Vibrational Spectra and Force Constants of the Elpasolites Cs2KMF6 (M = Sc, Y, La, Gd, Yb)The vibrational spectra of the elpasolites Cs2KMF6 (M = Sc, Y, La, Gd, Yb) have been recorded and assigned including the lattice vibrations. The vibrational frequencies thus obtained were used for the calculation of XVFF force constants. The values of the stretching force constants are discussed.

Notes: Abstract The application of microampere direct current (d.c.) to electrodes implanted in bone results in a proliferative response that has been found useful in the treatment of certain types of fracture. The mechanism of this response is unknown. In this investigation, the d.c. polarisation properties of 11 implantable cathode materials were measured,in vitro andin vivo, and then related to the conditions known to produce the osteogenic response. From these data, limiting parameters for clinical use of the various electrodes can be determined. Nitrogen purge experiments showed the dependence of the current on molecular oxygen and suggested that the products of oxygen reduction (H2O2, O2 −, OH·, OH− etc.) may mediate the proliferation of bone by appropriate cells in the region of the electrode. The presence of these intermediates, some of which are free radicals, and their possible side effects needs further study.

Notes: The infrared absorption and Raman spectra of SrCl2·2H2O powder as well as SrCl2·2D2O, and partially deuterated and isotopically dilute samples, have been recorded in the range from 30 to 4000 cm-1 at 95 and 295 K and analysed with regard to the strongly asymmetric force field in the H2O molecules. This is shown by an unusually large splitting of the OH and OD stretching fundamentals of the HDO molecules: 3426 and 3243 cm-1 and 2534 and 2408 cm-1 respectively at 95 K. Uncoupled OD stretching frequencies of SrCl2·6H2O and SrCl2·H2O are also presented. In SrCl2·2H2O both a relatively strong and a weak hydrogen bond to chloride ions are present; these are essentially straight. The spectra of SrCl2·2H2O exhibit the following characteristics: (1) no intramolecular coupling of the OH stretching vibrations; (2) very large Fermi resonance of νOH and 2δH2O; (3) the same high intensity of H2O twisting librations in the infrared spectra as for wagging and rocking modes; (4) splitting of the librational fundamentals of the HDO molecules, as large as 100 cm-1, caused by different structural arrangements of the H and D atoms in the asymmetric H2O molecules; and (5) strong intermolecular coupling of bending and librational fundamentals, which results in correlation splittings up to 75 cm-1. Possibilities of assigning the librational modes of H2O molecules which are in an asymmetric force field are discussed.
