    Description: The task of investigating the effect of SAS was formulated as two optimal control problems for stochastic systems: (1) to compute SAS gains with a rate model in the performance index algorithm; and (2) to calculate the pilot gains and system gust response using an optimal pilot model. Both problems were solved to yield reasonable low gains for the pilot and SAS, and the lateral directional mode poles and the longitudinal short period poles could be placed accurately by the model matching algorithm. Of the longitudinal (SAS) poles achieved, the vertical rms path error was least for the unaugmented poles. The lateral rms path error was an order of magnitude larger than the vertical error and showed a plus or minus 50 percent variation with SAS. It increased with dutch roll frequency and damping, and it decreased most significantly with increased roll stability. The variation in lateral error with bank angle for curved flight was also a significant function of the augmented poles.

    Description: The satellite (CTS) is tentatively scheduled to be launched in January 1976. It will be available for educational and societal experimentation early in 1977. This paper will outline some of the educational experiments involving the CTS. The major object of the experiments is to assess the communications and educational implications of the CTS in northern Ontario; the existing communications facilities for this region of approximately 725,000 sq km (inhabited largely by native people) are extremely limited. It is expected to assess the extent to which: (1) a satellite communications system might resolve the communications deficiency, (2) the native people will use the experimental facility, and (3) health and general educational programs, especially utilizing the interactive mode, will be viable.

    Description: Electron cooling rates for electron vibrational excitation of CO2 and CO and rotational excitation of CO are calculated. Results of the calculation are expressed as closed form analytic relations that are both convenient for numerical calculations and valid over a wide range of electron and neutral temperatures. It is found that the cooling rates and their temperature dependences differ significantly from other calculations. For CO2, these differences are related mainly to the assumptions about the approach to equilibrium and not to the actual cross-section choices. For electron temperatures below 1000 K and gas temperatures near 300 K (representative of conditions in the Venus atmosphere, where collisional cooling of the electrons dominates), the CO2 cooling rate is as much as an order of magnitude larger than previously considered in ionospheric models.

    Description: Measurements of neutral composition and temperature obtained between December 6, 1975, and September 17, 1976, with instruments aboard the near-equatorial AE-E satellite are analyzed to determine the diurnal variations at altitudes from 145 to 295 km. The general trends, including the shift in oxygen phase from afternoon at high altitudes to morning at low altitudes, are reproduced by circulation theories. The oxygen and helium variations show small departures from diffusive equilibrium below 200 km that are consistent with wind-induced diffusion and provide the first direct evidence of transport processes in the diurnal tide of the thermosphere.

    Description: This paper describes the current work at NASA/Johnson Space Center in the area of RF coverage analysis and performance-assessment for the Space Shuttle Program communication and tracking radio links. Trajectories, antenna data, ground station and Shuttle hardware performance characteristics and RF link math models were assimilated to generate RF link performance predictions for the three basic mission phases - ascent, on-orbit, and descent. Results identify some earlier deficiencies that required re-configuration of the ground station. Overall performance is currently satisfactory.

    Description: The maximum production rate of NO per ion pair during a solar proton event has been calculated using an approach described by Porter et al. (1976). For altitudes between 80 and 120 km the calculation yields a limit of 2.68 NO per ion pair for 10 keV electrons, a value which is consistent with the rates implied by the measurements of Arnold (1978) as quoted by Fabian et al. (1979). For altitudes below 80 km the maximum rate of NO production is calculated to be 1.46 to 1.53 NO per ion pair.
