    Description: Comparative Michelson interferometers are discussed as well as the operating range potential of a structural alignment sensor (SAS) which requires only one laser mode. Schematics are presented for the distance measurement logic, the basic SAS system, the SAS optical layout, the coarse measurement signal processor, and the measured range resolution.

    Description: Fecal bile acid patterns for the Apollo 17 flight were studied to determine the cause of diarrhea on the mission. The fecal sterol analysis gave no indication of an infectious diarrhea, or specific, or nonspecific etiology occurring during the entire flight. It is assumed that the gastrointestinal problems encountered are the consequences of altered physiology, perhaps secondary to physical or emotional stress of flight.

    Description: A systems engineering study of a lighter than air airship transportation system was conducted. The feasibility of the use of airships in hauling cargo was demonstrated. Social, legal, environmental and political factors were considered as well as the technical factors necessary to design an effective airship transportation system. In order to accomplish an effective airship transportation program two phases of implementation were recommended. Phase I would involve a fleet of rigid airships of 3.5 million cubic feet displacement capable of carrying 25 tons of cargo internal to the helium-filled gas bag. The Phase I fleet would demonstrate the economic and technical feasibility of modern-day airships while providing a training capability for the construction and operation of larger airships. The Phase II portion would be a fleet of rigid airships of 12 million cubic feet displacement capable of carrying a cargo of 100 tons a distance of 2,000 miles at a cruising speed of 60 mph. An economic analysis is given for a variety of missions for both Phase I and Phase II airships.

    Description: Harrison's one-electron bond-orbital model of tetrahedrally coordinated solids was generalized to a two-electron model, using an extension of the method of Falicov and Harris for treating the hydrogen molecule. The six eigenvalues and eigenstates of the two-electron anion-cation Hamiltonian entering this theory can be found exactly general. The two-electron formalism is shown to provide a useful basis for calculating both non-magnetic and magnetic properties of semiconductors in perturbation theory. As an example of the former, expressions for the electric susceptibility and the dielectric constant were calculated. As an example of the latter, new expressions for the nuclear exchanges and pseudo-dipolar coefficients were calculated. A simple theoretical relationship between the dielectric constant and the exchange coefficient was also found in the limit of no correlation. These expressions were quantitatively evaluated in the limit of no correlation for twenty semiconductors.

    Description: The two-electron bond-orbital model of tetrahedrally-coordinated solids is generalized and its application extended. All intrabond matrix elements entering the formalism are explicitly retained, including the direct overlap S between the anion and cation sp3 hybrid wavefunctions. Complete analytic results are obtained for the six two-electron eigenvalues and eigenstates of the anion-cation bond in terms of S, one-electron parameters V2 and V3, and two-electron correlation parameters V4, V5 and V6. Refined formulas for the dielectric constant and the nuclear exchange and pseudodipolar coefficients, as well as new expressions for the valence electron density, polarity of the bond and the cohesive energy, are then derived. The theory gives a good account of the experimentally observed trends in all properties considered and approximate quantitative agreement is achieved for the pseudodipolar coefficient.

    Description: The one-electron bond-orbital model of Harrison (1973) for tetrahedrally coordinated solids is modified to a two-electron model using a generalization of Falicov and Harris' (1969) method for treating the hydrogen molecule. Expressions for nuclear-exchange and pseudodipolar interactions are obtained in terms of bond-orbital model parameters. The eigenfunctions and eigenvalues of the Hamiltonian are employed along with standard perturbation theory to calculate the energy shifts resulting from the application of an external electric field and induced by the magnetic interaction between the nuclear spins and the bond-electron spins. The quantitative predictions of the derived formulas are examined for real semiconductors involving elements and compounds from periodic groups III, IV, and V. It is concluded that the present two-electron model makes it possible to assess the quantitative effects of electron correlation in the anion-cation bond for both nonmagnetic properties (electric susceptibility, dielectric constant) and magnetic properties (nuclear-exchange and pseudodipolar interactions) of various materials.

    Description: A systems analysis of energy recovery from solid waste demonstrates the feasibility of several current processes for converting solid waste to an energy form. The social, legal, environmental, and political factors are considered in depth with recommendations made in regard to new legislation and policy. Biodegradation and thermal decomposition are the two areas of disposal that are considered with emphasis on thermal decomposition. A technical and economic evaluation of a number of available and developing energy-recovery processes is given. Based on present technical capabilities, use of prepared solid waste as a fuel supplemental to coal seems to be the most economic process by which to recover energy from solid waste. Markets are considered in detail with suggestions given for improving market conditions and for developing market stability. A decision procedure is given to aid a community in deciding on its options in dealing with solid waste, and a new pyrolysis process is suggested. An application of the methods of this study are applied to Houston, Texas.
