Beschreibung: For 2 weeks continuous imaging, photometry, and polarimetry observations were made of Jupiter and the Galilean satellites in red and blue light from Pioneer 11. Measurements of Jupiter's north and south polar regions were possible because the spacecraft trajectory was highly inclined to the planet's equatorial plane. One of the highest resolution images obtained is presented here along with a comparison of a sample of our photometric and polarimetric data with a simple model. The data seem consistent with increased molecular scattering at high latitudes.

Beschreibung: Considerations made in developing a model of pulsars are explored. Observational data seems to support the argument that pulsar magnetospheres may contain large masses of plasma. The cascade process resulting from pair creation enables one to interpret the X-ray emission from the Crab and Vela pulsars as synchrotron radiation. On the other hand, the optical radiation from the Crab pulsar is best understood as coherent curvature radiation. Radio emission is interpreted as curvature radiation produced by charge bunches moving along magnetic-field lines. Certain tests of this model are proposed.

Beschreibung: Postflight measurements of Achilles tendon reflex duration on Skylab crewmen indicate a state of disequilibrium between the flexor and extensor muscle groups with an initial decrease in reflex duration. As the muscles regain strength and mass there occurs an overcompensation reflected by increased reflex duration. Finally, when a normal neuromuscular state is reached the reflex duration returns to baseline value.

Beschreibung: A model of pulsars is outlined. Key early considerations were those which led to the identification of pulsars with neutron stars, the Goldreich-Julian model of pulsar magnetospheres, and the recognition that, in a pulsar magnetosphere, a high energy gamma ray may annihilate to produce an electron-positron pair. Arguments that suggest that pulsar magnetospheres may contain large masses of plasma, a suggestion which has important implications concerning the structure of the magnetosphere, are considered along with observational data which support a magnetosphere model based on that idea rather than the Goldreich-Julian model.

Beschreibung: The prediction of fluxes of energetic particles of solar or magnetospheric origin is addressed. Topics include the prediction of the properties of the particle populations generated by magnetospheric storms and substorms, and the prediction of long term variations in the populations of magnetospheric particles.

Beschreibung: A schematic representation of the generation and propagation processes for energetic particles of concern in solar terrestrial predictions is given. Particle precipitation at low, mid, and high altitudes is discussed with emphasis on prediction techniques. Methods given for testing of such techniques include traditional collaborations, enhanced collaborations, simulated prediction schemes, and field tests.

Beschreibung: High-resolution 21-cm hydrogen line observations at low galactic latitude are analyzed to determine the large-scale distribution of galactic hydrogen. Distribution parameters are found by model fitting, optical depth effects are computed using a two-component gas model suggested by the observations, and calculations are made for a one-component uniform spin-temperature gas model to show the systematic departures between this model and data obtained by incorrect treatment of the optical depth effects. Synthetic 21-cm line profiles are computed from the two-component model, and the large-scale trends of the observed emission profiles are reproduced together with the magnitude of the small-scale emission irregularities. Values are determined for the thickness of the galactic hydrogen disk between half density points, the total observed neutral hydrogen mass of the galaxy, and the central number density of the intercloud hydrogen atoms. It is shown that typical hydrogen clouds must be between 1 and 13 pc in diameter and that optical thinness exists on large-scale despite the presence of optically thin gas.

Beschreibung: The X-ray quantum efficiency of a CCD was still high enough to obtain good X-ray imaging with this device. The range and response of the CCD to incident X-rays in the 5 to 14.1 KeV range were determined experimentally. Knowledge of this range and response allows direct measurement of quantum efficiency. Quantum efficiency decreased monotonically from 82% to 35% in the range studied. Comparison of experimental and theoretical quantum efficiencies allowed a determination of silicon bulk electron diffusion length. For the device studied, the electron diffusion length was 75 micrometers.

Beschreibung: Buried channel CCD shift registers were irradiated with 15 MeV neutrons. The irradiations were performed at 80 K and 295 K on operating devices with normal clocks and bias voltages applied. Dark current increased from the pre-irradiation value of 7 nA/sq cm to 1,600 nA/sq cm at 1 x 10 to the 13th power n/sq cm. The input gate threshold shift observed at 80K was minus 0.9 volts per 10 to the 13th power n/sq cm, a factor of 4 less than that predicted from a first order calculation of the equivalent ionization dose of neutrons in the oxide. Transfer efficiency measurements yielded a bulk electron trap creation rate for neutron irradiation of 14.0 cm to the minus 1 power at 295 K with a trap emission time constant of 25 microseconds.
