Notes: Several N-tosylaminocarbonyl amino acids and corresponding di- and tripeptides were prepared in order to investigate the suitability of the tosylaminocarbonyl group as an amino protecting group in peptide chemistry. The group is shown to be selectively cleavable under neutral conditions.

Description: A small compact magnetic bearing design developed and tested features a bearing capable of supporting over ten times its own weight, dimensioned 8 cm diam by 3.75 cm, with rare-earth cobalt magnets. Only 1% of the device payload figures as part of the magnetic suspension. The design is servoed in two axes and exhibits inherent stability in three more degrees of freedom, with full rotational freedom in the desired axis. Capacitive radial gap sensing allows stiff servoing of the rotation axis. Differential sensing and EM control linearize control functions. Low power drain, simple fabrication and assembly, and larger clearances than in air bearings or ball bearings are reported

Description: A magnetic bearing development is documented, which has been successfully applied to support a 0.9 kg - 19 cm diameter rotor in 5 degrees of freedom, with fully controlled drive capability to plus or minus 200 rad/s in the other axis. The construction details are described and illustrated. Performance data on five design variations are presented which extend the load capacity to 8 kilograms at which point the bearing element on the rotor is less than one-half of 1 percent of the total load capacity.

Description: A magnetic bearing is described which includes a pair of coaxial, toroidal, and permanent magnets having axially directed poles. Like poles of the permanent magnets are adjacent to each other, whereby the permanent magnets have a tendency to be urged apart along the common axis. An electromagnet is wound coaxially with the permanent magnets in such a manner that the poles are axially directed. Between the poles of each permanent magnet there is a low magnetic reluctance circuit including two series air gaps. Between the poles of the electromagnet a low reluctance path including only one air gap of each of the low magnetic reluctance circuits is provided. The low reluctance path for the electromagnet includes a ring axially translatable relative to the permanent magnets. The ring forms opposite faces of the air gaps in the magnetic circuits for each permanent magnet.
