Notes: Formation and relaxation of crazes on different polymeric films are determined by permeability measurements in a high pressure test cell. Thermal dependence of the films permeability has been studied and interpreted on the basis of segmental movement of the macromolecules. These permeability measurements also offer a way to determine the glass transition temperature of amorphous films.

Notes: The dynamic relaxation behavior of a model two-phase system, poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate)-glass beads, was studied by means of a freely oscillating torsional pendulum. The effect of the filler content on the storage and loss moduli of the composites could be described in terms of the modified Kerner equation in complex form. At temperatures below the glass transition temperature of the matrix, the agreement between experimental and theoretical data was satisfactory after correction for thermally induced stress due to different thermal expansion coefficients of matrix and filler. In the presence of filler, the capacity of the matrix to store and dissipate energy increases, but the character of molecular motions underlying the dispersions observed is preserved because the temperature of the dispersions remains unchanged. The effect of water on the dynamic relaxation behavior of composites is primarily reflected in changes in the shape of the temperature dependence of the dissipating capacity of the matrix. The data allow the conclusion to be drawn that the chain mobility at the interphase boundary does not decrease and that no additional frictional mechanisms appear.

Notes: The temperature dependence of the components of the complex tensile and shear modulus of composites thermoplastic polyurethane rubber (Estan 5707)-crosslinked polymeric filler has been determined using torsional pendulum and Rheovibron viscoelastometer techniques. For comparison, dynamic mechanical properties of the system Estan 5707-glass beads were determined. The temperature dependence of the relative modulus (modulus of composite/modulus of matrix) of the former composites exhibited a pronounced maximum at about 50°C above the glass transition temperature of the matrix. This maximum of reinforcement was discussed in terms of (a) immobilized interfacial layer, (b) broadening of the spectrum of relaxation times, and (c) increase in the glass transition temperature of the matrix. From the excess reinforcement, i.e., the discrepancy between experimental data and theoretical prediction, an apparent thickness of the immobilized layer was calculated.

Notes: Tensile properties of a poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate) (PHEMA) network filled with various amounts of glass beads, in the dry and the equilibrium water-swollen states, have been studied below and above Tg. The temperature ranged from 5° C to 170° C and the volume fraction of the filler was up to 50 percent. In the glassy region it has been found that the temperature at which the transition from brittle to ductiel behavior occurs is increased by the presence of the filler. In the brittle zone the strength of the composites is decreased by the presence of the filler and can be predicted by using a finite element method; in the ductile zone, however, the strength of the composites reaches that of the unfilled polymer. In the rubbery region failure envelopes have been obtained for both dry and swollen PHEMA/glass bead composites. Using a double shift procedure all the data have been superimposed to obtain universal failure envelopes for the two different states. The dependence of the shift factors on filler content is discussed.

Notes: The hot drawing of extruded composite sheets can be used to control the orientation of both matrix and reinforcing fibers. A study was made of the effect of draw ratio on the properties of an extruded polystyrene sheet containing 0 to 1 percent of short glass fibers. An increase in draw ratio resulted in an increase in fiber orientation. A model of a rigid fiber rotating in an elongational flow field was used to describe the effect of draw ratio on the final orientation distribution. An increase in draw ratio also caused an increase in the amount of fiber breakage. A shear-lag analysis was used to estimate the extent of damage as a function of draw ratio. It was also found that the mechanical properties were dependent upon both the draw ratio and fiber concentration.

Notes: The effects of thermal treatment, residual solvent, and preswelling on the thermal properties and swelling behavior of solution cast polyblend films of poly(2,6-dimethyl,1,4-phenylene oxide) (PPO) and polystyrene (PS) were determined. Repeated cycling in the DSC analysis of the “as cast” films suggested that the original films contained residual casting solvent and that solvent-induced crystallization occurred in the PPO-rich compositions. Crystallinity was, apparently, eliminated by the first heating cycle in the differential scanning calorimeter. Sorption kinetics and apparent equilibria, characterizing the penetration of these films by n-hexane from the vapor phase, indicated that both the sorption rate and apparent equilibria are significantly affected by the prior history of the film samples. The sorption results presented here are quantitatively consistent with earlier studies of the PPO-PS system. The increased rate and amount of sorption observed in preswollen samples, and the reduced rate and amount of sorption observed in annealed samples are consistent with recent descriptions of sorption behavior in diverse glassy homopolymer systems.

Notes: A ‘tubeless syphon’ was used as an elongational viscometer for the purpose of measuring elongational viscosities of glass bead suspensions in dilute polymer solutions. It was found that while the shear viscosities increased, the elongational viscosities decreased very sharply with increasing bead concentration. The conclusions from the present data are then compared with the observed changes in the elastic properties of two phase molten polymer systems. A double shift procedure has been successfully adopted to correlate the experimental data.

Notes: In this paper the effect of temperature and filler content φ on electrical resistivity of styrene-acrylonitrile polymer filled with iron or aluminium powders has been investigated. The resistivity of such composites decreases suddenly by several orders of magnitude at a critical volume concentration φc, which depends on the size distribution of particles and on thermal history. For filler content lower than φc, the resistivity decreases with increasing temperature, whereas for φ 〉 φc there is a sudden increase in resistivity at temperatures near the glass transition temperature of the polymeric matrix. This effect is more pronounced than the previously reported data on other composite systems.
