    Notizen: The high-resolution carbon-13 NMR spectrum of hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC) with about 2.5 moles of ethylene oxide (MS 2.5) average substitution per anhydroglucose ring (AHG) is presented. From models, the CMR chemical shifts for all of the different carbon atoms are assigned. Direct measurement of the relative intensities of the CMR signals for certain carbon atoms in HEC permits rapid and accurate computation of (1) the average chain length of poly(ethylene oxide); (2) the degree of substitution of ethylene oxide, and (3) the average relative degree of substitution of the alcohol groups on the AHG ring.

    Notizen: The reverse osmosis properties of ionically crosslinked polyacrylic acid membranes were investigated in terms of the salt separation of a 0.1% NaCl solution and water flux. The membranes were synthesized and crosslinked with the metal ion Al3+ via the dry casting technique described in a previous paper. The effect of such variables as the polymer concentration in the casting solution, the ratios of solvents used (DMF/H2O), the ratio of monomer to the crosslinking agent (AA/Al), the evaporation time and temperature, and the nonsolvent nature and treatment times were studied in some detail. The most important variable was found to be the length and nature of the treatment in the nonsolvents acetone and methanol. In the best series of the membranes that were synthesized, fluxes of more than 3.0 gfd, with salt separations at the 80%-85% level, were obtained.

    Notizen: The changes in several parameters of the candicidin fermentation (total, mycelium-associated, and extracellular product formation; growth rate; DNA content; glucose utilization; dissolved oxygen in the broth; and oxygen uptake rate) during the trophophase-idiophase transition are compared with previously reported data for the polyene macrolides, candidin and candihexin. The maturation time, tm, and the productformation rate constant, kp, have been calculated for each of the three polyene macrolides using a simple mathematical model. Slow-feeding of glucose, which resulted in candidin and candihexin overproduction has been shown to increase the polyene formation rate constant and toretard trophophase to idiophase transition (longer maturation time). The opposite effect is achieved by repeated feeding of soybean meal. The values of the maturation times and polyene formation rates obtained were used to predict the production of polyene macrolide antibiotics in batch cultures.

    Notizen: Poly(methyl α-chloroacrylate) (PMCA) and the copolymers of methyl methacrylate and methyl α-chloroacrylate (poly(MMA-co-MCA)) have been reported recently to be more susceptible to radiation degradation than poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). In this paper we report our studies of PMCA and poly(MMA-co-MCA) as electron-sensitive positive resists. It has been found that both PMCA and the copolymers are more sensitive than PMMA. Using mixtures of dimethylformamide and 2-propanol as developers, the sensitivities of PMCA and poly(MMA-co-MCA) (38 mole percent MCA) have been found to be 1 × 10-5 and 6 × 10-6 coulomb/cm2, respectively. It has also been found that crosslinking predominates in PMCA when the electron dose exceeds 6 × 10-4 coulomb/cm2.

    Notizen: The evaporation of the solvent 1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene from the ternary system polystyrene/polybutadiene/tetrahydronaphthalene was studied. Ternary solutions of precisely known weight concentrations were prepared and then dried under vacuum and elevated temperatures. When the solution was assumed completely dried to a solid, the solvent content was calculated by difference. The deviation between the two solvent contents, namely, that known by exact weighing of components and that calculated after drying, was found to be significant, the reason for this discrepancy resting in the fact that solvent is assumed entrapped in the polystyrene fraction of the polymer residue. The possibility of the formation of interpenetrating networks causing this solvent entrapment is discussed as is a possible means of achieving more efficient solvent evaporation.

The salts derived from trimethylamine are stable in alkali, whereas the ones containing pyridinium groups are unstable in alkali, and are formaldehyde donors and gelatin hardeners.     Notizen: The molecular weight distribution of two grades of poly(methyl methacrylate) was determined, and the solubility of that polymer in methyl ethyl ketone-2-propanol mixtures was studied. The effects of the molecular weight distribution of the polymer and the strength of the developing solvent on electron resist sensitivity were studied experimentally and compared with a computer model of the electron exposure process. The molecular weight and the molecular weight distribution were found to have a significant effect on the sensitivity of poly(methyl methacrylate) as an electron resist. Increased sensitivity is predicted for higher molecular weight and narrower molecular weight distribution.
