Notes: A compartmental dispersion model of longitudinal mixing in tube networks has been developed. The ability of this model to predict the impulse response of helium, benzene vapor, and sulfur hexafluride tracer gases in two and in five generation symmetric network models of the large airway system of the lung has been tested over an air flow range of 1 to 400 ml/s.The results imply that velocity profile distortion and secondary flows in branching regions have only a small effect upon the overall longitudinal mixing when flow is directed toward the higher-order generations. On the other hand, accurate prediction of the data requires adequate treatment of the finite rate of evolution of the Taylor dispersion occurring in these tube networks.

Notes: The use of another air operated extreme pressure hydraulic pump fitted with either a needle valve or a simple microbore tube is described, together with the figures obtained for the soluble protein released from suspensions of commercially obtained baker's yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae). The theory of the mechanism is also discussed.

Notes: The dynamics of a system of two microbial populations having complementary metabolism are investigated by means of simple mathematical models of growth. Complementary metabolism as used here means that each population produces a substance - not present in the initial or feed medium - required by the other for growth. The simple models indicate that (1) something other than lack of the substrate or growth factor produced by its partner must limit the growth of at least one population and (2) the coexistence steady state of such populations in continuous culture is not stable with respect to large perturbations, though it is stable with respect to a wide range of perturbations.

Notes: Combined CI-HY method techniques have been employed in obtaining a 57-term CI-HY wave function with an energy of -14.66632 a.u. A method due to Brown has been adopted for obtaining this wave function and various shorter expansions. A 44-term expansion with an energy of -14.66606 a.u. is analyzed in terms of various pair effects, and qualitative arguments are presented for understanding these effects.

Notes: Combined CI-HY method calculations are reported for the ground and first three excited S states of He with an error on the order of 10-7 a.u. within the same 120-term basis. For He 1P, the four lowest states are obtained with an error ≤2 × 10-6 a.u. within the same 102-term basis. H-1 S and 1P states are also treated by the same CI-HY technique. The utility of an spd Slater-type orbital, rijv, v = 0, 1 basis is investigated, with indications that it might be an excellent basis for states of first row atoms.

Notes: A quantitative method is reported for the determination of n-hexane, 2-hexanone and 2,5-hexanedione in biological tissues by stable isotope dilution using gas chromatography mass spectrometry. n-[2H14]Hexane, 2-[2H5]hexanone and 2,5-[2H10]hexanedione are used as the isotopic diluents. After tissue homogenization and extraction of the three compounds in the presence of the deuterated internal standards, analysis is carried out in a single gas chromatographic injection by selected ion monitoring. Principal advantages of the technique are the ease of sample handling, rapidity of analysis and low limits of detection. The methodology is used to determine the organ distribution, pharmacokinetics and metabolism of n-hexane to 2-hexanone and 2,5-hexanedione in rats following inhalation exposure.

Notes: Copoly(4,4′-oxanilideterephthalamide - 4,4′-phenyleneterephthalamide) (A-202/PPD) was synthesized by reaction of 4,4′-diaminooxanilide, p-phenylenediamine, and terephthaloyl chloride in organic solvents. Copolymer inherent viscosities in H2SO4 as high as 10.3 were obtained. Isotropic copolymer solutions (4% - 5% concentration) of A-202/40%-80% PPD were spun to fibers with tenacity/elongation/modulus at 1% extension in the 13-14 gpd/1.5%-2%/700-1000 gpd range. Oxamide and amide stabilities in 98-100% H2SO4 and 20% oleum were compared. Poly(4,4′-oxanilideterephthalamide) (A-202), A-202/PPD copolymers, and poly(4,4′-phenyleneterephthalamide) (PPT) were unstable in 20% oleum, but all proved relatively stable in 100% H2SO4. However, the oxamide linkage proved less stable than the amide linkage in 98% H2SO4. A-202 and A-202/PPD copolymers formed stable anisotropic spinning solutions in 1% oleum at 10-20% concentrations. Dynamic mechanical analyses (Vibron) showed no glass transition temperature (Tg) below 200°C. Dilatometric measurement of A-202/50% PPD revealed a Tg at 257°C. Differential thermal analyses of A-202/40-80% PPD exhibited endotherms at 470-480°C. Thermogravimetric analyses showed no significant weight loss below 400°C.
