Notes: Abstract The concentration and turnover of dissolved free amino acids were measured in samples from 25 and 100 m on three occasions at a station 6 miles off the California (USA) coast. Individual amino acid concentrations varied from undetectable (〈0.05 μg/l) to 3 μg/l, the total amino acid concentration from 1.8 to 8.5 μg/l. The greater concentration of total amino acids was always found at 25 m. The predominant amino acids were serine, lysine, aspartate, glutamate and alanine; reliable analyses could not be made for glycine because of a high blank. For the 10 individual amino acids studied, the rate of heterotrophic turnover ranged from undetectable to 1.2 μg/l day-1; serine, aspartate, alanine and glutamate showed the highest rates. In samples from 25 m, the rates were 15 to 20 times higher than those taken from 100 m. The total calculated flux of the amino acids studied varied from 0.015 to 3.2 μg/l day-1 and amounted to 1–10% of photosynthetic carbon dioxide fixation.

Notes: Abstract The rate of primary production, excretion of photosynthetic products and turnover of glucose and amino acids was measured at a station in a coastal region in the Bahamas. Over the depths 0 to 50 m, total photosynthetic rates varied from 1.7 to 12.7 μgC fixed 1-1day-1, averaging 4.3. The extent of extracellular photosynthetic products ranged from undetectable to 23%, averaging 6.9%. Neither the field data nor studies with axenic cultures of Dunaliella tertiolecta, Skeletonema costatum, and Monochrysis lutheri showed any evidence of an increase in the percentage excretion at low population densities or low photosynthetic rates. Rates of amino acid turnover varied from 21 to 168% day-1, and that of glucose from 8.3 to 41% day-1. Light seems to have little effect on the uptake and respiration of these substrates by the planktonic population. There was a significant relationship between the fraction of the substrate used for respiration and that retained by the cell. On average, 42% of the glucose taken up was respired and 21% of the amino acid mixture. Tentative calculations suggest that the production of dissolved organic material as extracellular photosynthetic products would be insufficient to supply the heterotrophic population, and it was concluded that some other route(s) must be of major importance.

Notes: Abstract Cytochemical and ultrastructural analysis of wild-type cells of Saccharomyces cerevisiac, grown aerobically in a glucose-limited chemostat, shows that cytochrome c peroxidase is localized between the membranes of the cristae, that is, in the intracristal space. This enzyme is thus positioned appropriately within the organelle to act as an alternate terminal oxidase for the respiratory chain. The proximity of the peroxidase to major sites of generation of its two substrates may account for the small leakage of hydrogen peroxide from yeast mitochondria, as compared with the larger outflow from mammalian mitochondria. In the cytoplasmic petite mutant, gross distortion of promitochondrial membrane arrangement is evident. Nevertheless, cytochrome c peroxidase activity is present in the same amounts as is found in wildtype cell, and is localized predominantly within annuli of membrane which constitute the promitochondria in these cells. No unequivocal evidence was obtained for the localization of catalase in microbodies or other organelles in either wild-type or petite cells.

Notes: Abstract Uredospores of a barley isolate ofPuccinia striiformis West. were germinated on glucose peptone agar and the development of colonies was observed with a microscope. A small number (0.1–1%) of germ tubes did not abort during the first 20 h of incubation and either differentiated an infection structure or continued slowly to elongate for several days. In 4 out of 9 experiments some of these sporelings produced colonies that reached maximum size (0.15–0.20 mm) after 3 weeks at 15° C.

Notes: Summary When dormant hazel seeds were subjected to six weeks chilling at 5° C their subsequent transfer to 20° C resulted in the accumulation of gibberellin (GA) followed by germination. In the presence of either phosphon D or β-chlorethyltrimethylammonium chloride (CCC) at 20° C there was inhibition of both GA accumulation and germination, a finding consistent with the hypothesis that GA biosynthesis is a necessary prerequisite for the germination of chilled hazel seeds. As abscisic acid showed a strong inhibition of germination but had little effect on GA accumulation it is presumed not to have affected GA biosynthesis but to have inhibited GA action. These conclusions were supported by experiments in which the interaction of exogenous GA3 with growth retardants and ABA was tested on the germination of chilled hazel seeds. Experiments in which the embryonic axes and cotyledons of chilled seeds were incubated separately at 20° C established that GA biosynthesis de novo occurred in the embryonic axis and indicated that in the intact seed some of the GA would have been translocated to the cotyledons. The isolated cytoledons showed no GA biosynthesis de novo but gave some release of GA from one or more bound forms.

Notes: Summary The productivity ofT. castaneum adults, previously reared in flour incorporating either the IGR methoprene or hydroprene, was found to be impaired depending on the concentration of the IGR in the flour, whether or not the individual was morphologically deformed, and its sex.

Notes: Abstract A method for calculating the structure of a close binary component is presented. It is seen that the effect of binary distortion is to shift the zero age main sequence to the right. Attempts to construct contact systems with these models confirm the results of earlier workers that this is not possible.

Notes: Abstract The structure of critically rotating polytropes is calculated using two (reated) Roche-type approximation schemes, one of which has been developed for stellar models. Comparisons with other results are made as a validation of these methods in stellar structure calculations.

Notes: Abstract The evolution of spin in a star undergoing adiabatic mass loss is considered. It is established that adiabatic mass loss cannot drive spin. If such a mass loss is due to a binary component overflowing its Roche lobe then this result rules out the possibility of asynchronous rotation in close contact systems. If the mass loss is driven by some other mechanism then a ‘spin up’ of the star is also not possible.
