Notes: Summary It has been possible — by transplantation of brain tissue (i.e. mushroom-bodies) — to perform an interindividual transfer of a learned time-signal in honeybees. The information of the donor bees becomes determinative for the temporal activity pattern of the recipients about 3 to 4 days following transplantation. As seen from histological investigations done in parallel, the donor tissue is treated as a xenograft by the recipient's organism including disintegration and encapsulation processes. These observations give evidence for a humoral transfer of information. The results are discussed from the point of view of the analysis of the mechanism of time reception.

Notes: Summary The misdirection (“Mißweisung”) which indicates a definite direction in the bee's dance is correlated to daily variations of the total intensity (ΔF) of the earth's magnetic field (EMF). It depends on the orientation of the dancing place with regard to the EMF coordinates. The distance of the feeding place, however, is insignificant. There exists a positive correlation between the efficiency ofΔF and a progressive tilting of the comb toward the horizontal position. No difference is observed in the intensity and exactness of the bees' dancing whether they are dancing on the lower side of the oblique comb in a somewhat ‘hanging’ attitude or on the upper side. The efficiency ofΔF is comparable on both sides of the comb. Bees dancing on a horizontal comb orient primarily to the main first-order directions of the EMF and, to a lesser extent, to the second-order directions regardless of the direction of the feeding place. The vector of the permanent EMF is without significance. The only important factors are the dynamic variation of field intensity and the position of the comb in relation to the EMF coordinates. The phenomenon of misdirection is described in terms of a mathematicophysical equation which fits misdirection for variable positions of the comb. Misdirection is characterized as a phenomenon of hysteresis. Compensation of the EMF turns the misdirection to zero. It becomes more prominent, however, following amplification of natural field strength or may be altered by artificial magnetic fields. The upper limit of physiologic efficiency is an amplification factor of about 5 to 8 compared to natural field strength. Fields of alternating current differing as to frequency, type of oscillation, and direction of the vector prove ineffective in this respect. Nothing is yet known about the mechanism of reception. From the results presented, paramagnetic effects are discussed.

Notes: Summary A new case of ring chromosome 4 in a 2-day-old female child with multiple malformations is described. By means of the GTG-banding technique, a karyotype 46,XX,r(4), (p16→q35) was determined. The characteristics of the child's karyotype and the relationship with the structure of the chromosome, especially the location of the deletion that produces the syndrome, are compared with previous reports.

Notes: Abstract A study was made of the thermal decompositions of the hydrates of 5 neutral sulphate complexes and 5 hydroxy-sulphate complexes of uranium(IV). The hydrates did not yield corresponding stable anhydrous compounds. After dehydration, the complexes decomposed in endothermic reactions involving progressive substitution of sulphur trioxide (that is liberated) by oxygen, giving oxy-sulphates and other compunds.

Notes: Synopsis Whele homogenate of guinea-pig small intestine mucosa was analysed by centrifugation in a zonal rotor. The results indicate that FAD-linked α-glycerophosphate dehydrogenase is localized in the mitochondria and that NAD-linked α-glycerophosphate dehydrogenase is a soluble phase enzyme. An enzyme hydrolysing α-naphthyl palmitate at an acid pH was localized in the lysosomes and was activated by 0.1% Triton X-roo and by freezing and thawing. An alkaline hydrolase acting on β-naphthyl laurate was localized in the ‘microsomes’. The possibility of this enzyme being different from α-naphthyl acetate hydrolase is discussed.

Notes: Summary The relation between remanent magnetization and volumetric strain for gabbro samples stressed in uniaxial compression inside a near zero-field μ-metal shield has been examined. For samples with an induced IRM parallel to the axis of compression, remanent magnetization decreased linearly up to the onset of dilatancy. As increased stress produced additional dilatancy, the variation of remanent magnetization became nonlinear, and the stress dependence continually decreased until the rock failed. Stress cycling with the peak stress augmented for each cycle produced a continuous decrease in the zero stress value of the IRM although an appreciable amount of recovery was observed during unloading. When the sample was loaded in constant stress increments after the onset of dilatancy and held for several minutes at each level, time-dependent variations in remanent magnetization coincided with time-dependent increases in inelastic volumetric strain. In general as the inelastic creep rate increases, the rate of change in remanent magnetization increases. These results suggest that dilatancy related effects of the intensity of rock magnetization should be observed in magnetic rocks in epicentral regions prior to earthquakes and may serve as both long- and short-term precursors.

Notes: Summary The effect of suboptimal levels of α-ecdysone on the differentiation in vitro ofDrosophila melanogaster wing discs was enhanced by the addition of larval fat body to the cultures. However, similar experiments with β-ecdysome showed no enhancement. It is suggested that a partial conversion of α-ecdysone to β-ecdysone by the fat body may well account for these results.

Notes: Summary An ultrastructural analysis is presented of the cuticular and neural structures formed by the prothoracic leg and wing imaginal discs of maleDrosophila melanogaster larvae during culture in vitro with 0.2 μg/ml of β-ecdysone. A pupal cuticle, and subsequently an imaginal cuticle with a well-defined epicuticle and a laminated endocuticle is formed. The ultrastructure of the epidermis and of cuticular structures such as bristles, trichomes, apodemes, and tracheoles is very similar to that found in situ. Dendrites and nerve cell bodies are formed in vitro, and sensory axons form nerve bundles similar to those of normal appendages in situ, despite their isolation from the central nervous system. It is concluded that at the ultrastructural level, differentiation in vitro closely parallels the normal course of development.
