Notes: Summary The European corn borer (Ostrinia nubilalis) diapauses as a last instar larva. Both induction and termination of diapause are photoperiodically controlled. Larvae enter diapause (Fig. 1) when raised in light cycles containing 12 or 13 h of light per 24 h (LD 12∶12 or LD 13∶11). When placed in LD 16∶8, diapausing larvae undergo pupation and adult development (Fig. 2, 3). Long light cycle (T) experiments demonstrate that the timing mechanism involved in terminating diapause has the properties of an interval timer or hourglass mechanism (Fig. 4). Six inductive 8-h dark phases are necessary for optimal termination (Fig. 5), and they must be coupled with at least 4 h of light per cycle (Fig. 6). The circadian system inOstrinia is probably not involved in any way in this response.

Notes: Summary The surface areas of three different samples of hydroxyapatite, samples of deproteinized bone, and samples of whole and deproteinized enamel were determined by adsorption of an adduct (the diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A with N-phenylglycine) from methylene chloride solution. In all cases, the surface areas of these samples agree well with those obtained by the BET (N2) method.

Notes: Abstract Membrane-free folded chromosomes were purified from log-phase cultures of Escherichia coli and prepared for electron microscopy by aqueous (Kleinschmidt and Zahn) spreading. The appearance of the chromosomes depended on the salt concentrations in spreading. At certain salt concentration, the chromosomes resembled rosettes, with supercoiled loops of DNA radiating from a central core containing RNA. The rosettes support previous models deduced from physical studies of folded chromosomes. Apparently, cores contain must of the visible RNA, and the organization of the core is linked to the organization of the DNA loops.

Notes: Abstract There is a theorem in ergodic theory which gives three conditions sufficient for a piecewise smooth mapping on the interval to admit a finite invariant ergodic measure equivalent to Lebesgue. When the hypotheses fail in certain ways, this work shows that the same conclusion can still be gotten by applying the theorem mentioned to another transformation related to the original one by the method of inducing.

Notes: Summary Copper has been localized in copper sulphate treated eggs of the slug Agriolimax reticulatus (Mü). This has been accomplished using a freeze-fracture technique, the freeze-dried halves of the fractured eggs being analysed in the scanning electron microscope, using both energy dispersive and wavelength dispersive X-ray microanalysis systems. The distribution of copper obtained using these methods has been compared with that achieved using a standard histochemical technique. Both techniques revealed that the copper is initially retained in the perivitelline membranes. The application of X-ray microanalysis to such studies is discussed.

Notes: Summary A new method is described for the histochemical localization of acid phosphatase. Naphthol AS BI, enzymatically released from naphthyl AS BI phosphoric acid, is coupled with diazotized 2,5-dibromoaniline to produce a fine insoluble red azo dye. The histochemical and cytochemical localization of this final reaction product in rat liver is described. In the electron microscope, sites of the azo dye can be detected by X-ray microanalysis of ultrathin cryosections of reactive tissue.

Notes: Summary The case of a 5-year-old boy with partial trisomy for the long arm of chromosome No. 4 is described. The pattern of abnormal development in this and in 12 previously reported cases is similar, but the phenotype is not as characteristic as that associated with some other types of chromosomal imbalance. The most consistent features are: growth and mental retardation, small head with narrow forehead, short philtrum, relatively large ears with incomplete differentiation of the pinnae, cryptorchidism, oedema of the hands and/or feet, and renal anomalies. Abnormal development of the thumb was present in 4 of 13 cases. Eleven of the 13 families had balanced translocation carriers whose future offspring would be at increased risk for a mental retardation syndrome.
