Notes: Abstract All seventeen black rats collected from Mauritius Island were characterized by having many extra small acrocentric autosomes. Their basic karyotype was of Oceanian type, because of the presence of the large metacentric M1 and M2 pairs, but chromosome numbers in 13 specimens among them were 42, those of 3 specimens 43, and those of the remaining one specimen 44. Although the Oceanian type rat had 2 small acrocentric autosomes (pair no. 13), 16 Mauritius rats had 10 small acrocentrics, and the remaining one had 8 small acrocentrics. Comparative karyotype analysis between Oceanian and Mauritius type rats showed that the extra small acrocentrics found in Mauritius rats were due to Robertsonian fission of small metacentric pairs no. 14 and 18 of the original Oceanian type rat. Only one rat with 8 small acrocentrics showed the heteromorphic pair no. 18 consisting of one metacentric and two acrocentrics. The large metacentric M1 chromosome in 13 of 17 rats examined showed homologous pair, but two of them were heteromorphic by involving one metacentric M1 and two acrocentrics. In the remaining two rats M1 chromosome was not observed, but acrocentric pairs no. 4 and 7 were included. These acrocentrics were also suggested to be originated from Robertsonian fission of the large metacentric M1 chromosome. Robertsonian fission seemed to be one of the important mechanism found in karyotype evolution.

Notes: Summary We found that aloe extract contains a lectin-like substance which reacts with serum proteins of various animals. Furthermore, in human serum 2 proteins,a 2-macroglobulin anda 1-antitrypsin, were shown to be reactive with aloe extract.

Notes: Abstract Thermodynamic data and known paleogeological data were used to deduce when and what elements (compounds) were readily available during the whole history of the earth. On the basic assumption that available compounds would dictate the type of organisms to emerge, we attempted to derive a kind of evolutionary tree. This was then compared with the existing evolutionary trees derived from the sequences of proteins and polynucleotides.

Notes: Abstract A theoretical model of the longitudinal strength of brittle fibre-reinforced composites with brittle reaction zones was presented for both cases of strongly and weakly bonded fibre/brittle zone interfaces. First, on the basis of the fracture mechanics, a model of the strength of the fibres coated with strongly adhering brittle zones was proposed as a function of the thickness of the brittle zones. Next, the conditions under which debonding occurs at the interfaces were investigated with the aid of the shear lag analysis proposed by Cox. The theoretical model was then examined using composites with strongly and weakly bonded interfaces. The proposed model agreed fairly well with the experimental results. Finally, the permissible thickness of the brittle zone below which no reduction in fibre strength appears was calculated, using the proposed theory, under the condition of strong interfacial bonding, for carbon, boron and silicon carbide fibres which are of practical use. The calculated values of the thickness were smaller than 1 μm.

Notes: Abstract By using the single carbon-steel fibre-copper matrix composites, the important parameters controlling dislocation motions in the fibre, matrix and composite, namely flow stress, internal stress, effective stress, change in flow stress due to change in strain-rate or temperature, stress exponent of strain-rate, effective stress exponent of dislocation velocity, activation volume and activation enthalpy were measured at the stage in which the mechanical interaction between the components was negligible. It was found that all the composite parameters were determined only by the properties of the components and for each parameter, a modified rule of mixtures was derived.

Notes: Summary Blue-green fluorescent subependymal cells with intraventricular processes were shown by the fluorescent histochemical method to be distributed from the preoptic recess to the infundibular recess of the frog hypothalamus. Electron microscopy revealed at least two types of CSF-contacting subependymal cells, type 1 containing large dense granules (about 100–200 nm in diameter) and type 2 containing small dense core vesicles (about 60–100 nm in diameter). Subsequent to fixation in permanganate solution, the small dense core vesicles in type 2 cells reacted with the fixative and consistently showed a dense content. However, the large granules in type 1 cells were mostly pale or less dense after this fixation. Two hours after intraventricular injection of 3H-dopamine, a large number of silver grains appeared only in the cytoplasm of intraventricular processes possessing dense core vesicles (type 2 cells). A few grains were also found in the perikarya. It is concluded that type 2 cells are catecholamine-storing cells. It is suggested that type 1 cells in the infundibular recess are peptidergic neurons which may secrete some hypothalamic regulating hormones of the anterior pituitary. Most of these cells in the preoptic recess belong to the neurosecretory cells of the preoptic nucleus, while some cells probably function similarly to those in the infundibular recess.
