Notes: A study was conducted on high alkalinity lye-peeling wastes from Irish potatoes to determine the optimum time and temperature of fermentation, predominant types of bacteria, and handling conditions suitable for fermentation. The optimum temperature for fermentation was 30°C. Both aerobic and anaerobic conditions were suitable for fermentation, but aerobic fermentation at 30-35°C was efficient in reducing the pH below 7.0. Wastes fermented more rapidly when seeded with previously fermented wastes. Starch content decreased in the wastes during fermentation, but total sugars and pectin increased in both nonsterilized and sterilized lots. Dry matter content decreased approximately 1% during fermentation but remained stable in storage. The greatest increase in acidity was due to lactic acid although small changes occurred in other organic acids. The major bacteria found in the fermented wastes were tentatively identified as L. delbrueckii, S. faecium and S. lads.

Notes: This paper examines some of the implications of introducing penalties for output not equalling demand by employing a general stochastic model for a firm facing an uncertain demand with a known probability density function. Several alternative objectives of the firm are considered: (1) maximization of expected profits; (2) maximization of the probability of achieving a particular target level of profits; and (3) maximization of target profits, given a target level of the probability of their being achieved. It is shown that the resulting probability density function of profits is not well defined. The shape and location of the function depend on the relative magnitudes of the model parameters and the output decision. Several important implications of this result for cost-volume-profit analysis are discussed.

Notes: Quantitative determinations of chlorophyll showed that Cuscuta hyalina and Striga hermonthica possess chlorophyll. No trace of chlorophyll was found in Orobanche ramosa. Autoradiographic evidence showed that both radiocarbon and radiophosphorous moved from host to parasite in alt three species. Photosynthesis occurs in S. hermonthica when the parasite is isolated from its host. The adventitious roots of S. hermonthica and O. ramosa appear to be functional in absorbing a proportion of the required inorganic substances and water. S. hermonthica is a hemiparasite, O. ramosa is a holoparasite but C. hyalina is best described as a partial parasite.

Notes: SYNOPSIS. A survey of 96 herbivorous mole-rats, Spalax leucodon Nordmann, in Lalahan district of Ankara, Turkey, revealed the presence of 6 new species of coccidia. The species found, the shape and average length-width dimensions (in micrometers) of their oocysts, and the numbers of animals from which they were isolated were as follow: Eimeria lalahanensis sp. n., subspherical to ellipsoidal (20.3 × 12.5), from 10; Eimeria tuzdili sp. n., spherical to subspherical with radially striated oocyst wall, (20.5 × 16.5), from 3; Eimeria spalacis sp. n., ellipsoidal to cylindrical (16.3 × 9.8), from 90; Eimeria elliptica sp. n., ellipsoidal (14.3 × 10.1), from 8; Eimeria turkmenica sp. n., ellipsoidal (11.3 × 8.9), from 1; Isospora anatolicum sp. n., spherical (7.6 × 5.1), from 1 animal. The overall infection rate for 96 examined herbivorous mole-rats was 100%.
