Description: Because of its position between the North Atlantic and the Arctic oceans, its young age, small size, and diversity of geological structures, the Norwegian-Greenland Sea provided a unique target for deep drilling on Leg 38 of the Glomar Challenger. From studies of the sediments and basement rocks it was expected to gain insight particularly as to the following: 1) The tectonic framework and evolution of this area with special emphasis on the continental margins and on questions concerned with shifts of spreading axis and existence of foundered continental areas. 2) The youngest times of existence of land bridges between Eurasia and North America and the effect these land bridges had on water circulation and paleoclimates. 3) The date of the initiation of glaciation and dates of glacial advances and retreats. 4) Description of the Tertiary marine microfauna and microflora of the Norwegian-Greenland Sea, which are essentially unknown at present, and investigation of their similarity with microfauna and microflora from other areas.

Description: Unlike many cruises of the Deep Sea Drilling Project, Leg 48 was scientifically planned to drill a number of sites to systematically address the problems of passive margin evolution. Site 400 was drilled at the foot of the Meriadzek Escarpment of North Biscay in 4399 meters depth. The site was located in a half-graben forming part of a succession of tilted and rotated fault blocks near the continent/ocean boundary. Site 401 was situated on the planated edge of a tilted fault-block underlying the southern edge of the Meriadzek Terrace on the north Biscay margin. Site 402 was located on the upper slope of the northern continental margin of the Bay of Biscay. The main objectives were to establish the presence or absence of shallow water Upper Cretaceous beds, and to penetrate pre-Aptian synrift sediments and the upslope equivalent of the deep water Albian-Aptian carbonaceous mudstones penetrated at Hole 400A.

Notes: The purpose of the study was to determine the effects of ultrasonic treatment on muscle microstructure, breaking strength, cook yield, and protein extractability of ground cured ham rolls. A miniaturized system was designed which subjected ground ham to slow mixing and ultrasonic treatment. The samples were mixed for various times up to 2 hr, then stuffed into stoppered glass tubes for cooking in 80°C water bath. Controls were treated similarly, but without ultrasonic treatment. Results showed that ultrasound caused changes in muscle microstructure, increased breaking strength as measured in g/cm2 on an Instron Universal Testing Machine, decreased cooking loss and increased the extractability of salt-soluble protein. Ultrasound had no effect on the extractability of water-soluble protein.

Notes: One hundred seven tomato varieties were grown in three different soil types in Minnesota and evaluated for pH in the underripe, ripe and overripe stages of maturity. The pH of one variety, Ace, exceeded 4.6 in the ripe stage of maturity. The pH of 12 varieties exceeded pH 4.6 in the overripe stage of maturity. Results indicate that the pH of cultivars increases as the tomato matures and that home canners’ should process only slightly underripe and firm ripe tomatoes. The growing location appears to affect the pH of the variety.

Notes: PGM3 activity was investigated in 150 ‘Boerbok’ goats and 132 Angora goats by means of horizontal starch gel electrophoresis. In ‘Boerbok’ goats no polymorphism was found. In Angora goats three different phenotypes have been recognized: F, S, and FS. The results suggest the occurrence of two common alleles: PGM3-F and PGM3-S at an autosomal locus with frequencies of 0.6176 and 0.3824, respectively.

Notes: Lake sediments of the last 1000 years provide a unique record of environmental changes. Methods of dating this record are reviewed and discussed. Sediments of the last 20 years, which are of particular biological significance because of their record of man-made changes in lakes (including enrichment and pollution) have been dated successfully by the distribution within them of the fallout product 137Cs, present in the atmosphere since 1954 and reaching a peak of supply in 1963. The structured pattern shown by the curve for 137Cs concentration in most sediments investigated indicates that faunal mixing of the surface muds does not destroy the vertical stratification of the sediment profile.Sediments up to 120 years old have been dated by a lead isotope technique, and the results of this proved consistent with both 137Cs dating and with palaeomagnetic dating where this was possible.Theoretical considerations of the application of radiocarbon dating to organic material of 18th and 19th century date are reviewed. Results of application of these radionuclide techniques to the sediments of a small lake, Blelham Tarn, near Windermere, are presented. Evidence from 137Cs and 210Pb dating of profiles from several different positions within the lake shows that the depth of the annual increment to the sediments varies by a factor of × 2 from place to place. The concentration within the sediment of chemical and biological variables shows no significant variation from one position to another; therefore calculated values for amounts of each variable included within unit area of the annual increment depend primarily on the thickness of this at the site chosen, and so cannot be directly related to the rates of supply of, for example, pollen grains or total organic matter, and so to rates of productivity. Results from nine 14C dates on material 400–1000 years old, when correlated with analyses for pollen and sediment composition, demonstrate the profound effects of agricultural practices in the catchment (assumed to be deforestation and ploughing) in disturbing the orderly transfer to lake sediments of material eroded from the catchment.

Notes: Abstract. The geographical distribution of an epizootic of perch Perca fluviatilis L., characterized by severe epidermal lesions and marked fish kills, is described. A wide variety of fungal and bacterial infections were found in diseased fish but the evidence suggests that they were not the primary cause of this condition. The primary pathogenic agent (assuming that it exists) or predisposing environmental factor has yet to be discovered. The severity of this disease is illustrated by monitoring the course of the epizootic in the perch population in Windermere. All age groups of fish were affected during the course of one year although the fish at spawning time appeared to be particularly vulnerable. There was a dramatic increase in the perch mortality in Windermere in 1976 and it is estimated that over 98% of the adult population (over 1 million fish) died in that year.

Notes: Squash (Cucurbita maxima Duchesne) plants were grown on normal and on nitrogen-deficient nutrients. The degrees of label incorporation into chloroplast lipids as well as non-chloroplast lipids were determined. Nitrogen-deficient tissues contain less chlorophyll, have a decreased chlorophyll a/b ratio, incorporate more label into phosphatidyl choline and phosphatidyl ethanolamine than into the chloroplast lipids such as mono- and digalactosyl diglycerides, have a reduced capacity to incorporate the hexose moieties into the glycolipids but normal capacity to incorporate bases into the phospholipids of non-chloroplast constituents, and have a normal level of total fatty acids even though the level of linolenate is decreased. All of this would suggest that the most evident changes in membrane lipid constituents during nitrogen-deficiency occur as changes in the chloroplast lipid constituents as opposed to the non-chloroplast lipid constituents.
