Notizen: This survey was conducted on the perceived popularity of PERT and PERT-type management systems; whether PERT'S applications were static, increasing, or decreasing, and whether its use was by choice or imposition. The extent of applications of PERT for managing various types of research and development (R&D) was examined with the view to ascertaining its individual popularity when applied to (a) basic research, (b) applied research, or (c) development projects. In addition, an inquiry was made into the estimated expense of PERT systems to plan and control projects as a percentage of the budget. The results of the survey are presented and discussed relative to various sizes of R&D organizations.

Notizen: Abstract. The geographical distribution of an epizootic of perch Perca fluviatilis L., characterized by severe epidermal lesions and marked fish kills, is described. A wide variety of fungal and bacterial infections were found in diseased fish but the evidence suggests that they were not the primary cause of this condition. The primary pathogenic agent (assuming that it exists) or predisposing environmental factor has yet to be discovered. The severity of this disease is illustrated by monitoring the course of the epizootic in the perch population in Windermere. All age groups of fish were affected during the course of one year although the fish at spawning time appeared to be particularly vulnerable. There was a dramatic increase in the perch mortality in Windermere in 1976 and it is estimated that over 98% of the adult population (over 1 million fish) died in that year.

Notizen: Lake sediments of the last 1000 years provide a unique record of environmental changes. Methods of dating this record are reviewed and discussed. Sediments of the last 20 years, which are of particular biological significance because of their record of man-made changes in lakes (including enrichment and pollution) have been dated successfully by the distribution within them of the fallout product 137Cs, present in the atmosphere since 1954 and reaching a peak of supply in 1963. The structured pattern shown by the curve for 137Cs concentration in most sediments investigated indicates that faunal mixing of the surface muds does not destroy the vertical stratification of the sediment profile.Sediments up to 120 years old have been dated by a lead isotope technique, and the results of this proved consistent with both 137Cs dating and with palaeomagnetic dating where this was possible.Theoretical considerations of the application of radiocarbon dating to organic material of 18th and 19th century date are reviewed. Results of application of these radionuclide techniques to the sediments of a small lake, Blelham Tarn, near Windermere, are presented. Evidence from 137Cs and 210Pb dating of profiles from several different positions within the lake shows that the depth of the annual increment to the sediments varies by a factor of × 2 from place to place. The concentration within the sediment of chemical and biological variables shows no significant variation from one position to another; therefore calculated values for amounts of each variable included within unit area of the annual increment depend primarily on the thickness of this at the site chosen, and so cannot be directly related to the rates of supply of, for example, pollen grains or total organic matter, and so to rates of productivity. Results from nine 14C dates on material 400–1000 years old, when correlated with analyses for pollen and sediment composition, demonstrate the profound effects of agricultural practices in the catchment (assumed to be deforestation and ploughing) in disturbing the orderly transfer to lake sediments of material eroded from the catchment.

Notizen: The purpose of the study was to determine the effects of ultrasonic treatment on muscle microstructure, breaking strength, cook yield, and protein extractability of ground cured ham rolls. A miniaturized system was designed which subjected ground ham to slow mixing and ultrasonic treatment. The samples were mixed for various times up to 2 hr, then stuffed into stoppered glass tubes for cooking in 80°C water bath. Controls were treated similarly, but without ultrasonic treatment. Results showed that ultrasound caused changes in muscle microstructure, increased breaking strength as measured in g/cm2 on an Instron Universal Testing Machine, decreased cooking loss and increased the extractability of salt-soluble protein. Ultrasound had no effect on the extractability of water-soluble protein.

Notizen: SUMMARY. The growth and recession of macrophytes on a shaded section of the R. Lambourn were documented by a mapping procedure. With the exception of Ranunculus spp., the changes in total cover did not indicate directly the pattern of growth and recession of the macrophyles. Analysis of gross changes, expressed as gains and losses on cover, indicated that colonization of gravel and silt by the dominant macrophyte, Berula erecta, did not vary seasonally. Colonization was at a constant rate of about 8% of the site each month throughout the year and this accounted for 50% of the total number of gains by Berula. Gains of Berula from Ranunculus showed an annual cycle with a maximum during the summer when Ranunculus was in recession. Gains of Berula from Callitriche spp. also varied annually but the maximum was during the autumn. Total losses of Berula were at a constant rate throughout the year but were to gravel and silt during the winter, to Ranunculus in spring and early summer and to Callitriche in late summer and autumn. Analysis of loss of Berula with time indicated that the position of the Berula carpet was constantly changing. The growth and recession of Berula could not be linked in a meaningful way to environmental variables. Callitriche and Ranunculus both showed an annual pattern of growth and recession. There was temporal separation of the two macrophytes with Ranunculus growing mainly in spring and early summer and Callitriche showing maximum growth in late summer and autumn, and some evidence of spatial separation. The observed differences between years in the growth of Callitriche could not be attributed to any of the environmental variables measured.Discharge was thought to be an important variable controlling the growth of Ranunculus since increase of Ranunculus in the spring was positively correlated with the mean discharge at that time. In years when discharge was low, the growth of Rununculus appeared to be restricted by shading from epiphytic algae which accumulated on the plant surfaces under these conditions.

Notizen: Abstract. Stomatal conductance and needle water potential of P. radiata clones were measured after 2, 5 and 8 months on plants grown in controlled environment rooms with markedly different water vapour saturation deficits (D). Conductance was significantly lower at high D, but water potential differences between treatments were not significant. When trees were moved between treatments most of the changes in conductances occurred within 2 h, with residual changes after 24 h. Water potentials were not different 24 h after the trees were moved. The effects were completely reversible.Transpiration rates of individual trees were highest in the high D treatment and lowest in the low D treatment. They were not linearly related to D because of decreasing conductance with increasing D.Height growth, diameter growth and foliage areas were not significantly different between treatments. Tracheid lumen diameters tended to be larger in trees grown at higher D although treatment differences were not significant. There were significant clonal differences in shoot conductance and tracheid dimensions.

Notizen: Annual electro fishing surveys were carried out over an 11-year period at five sites on an upland river, which was subject to dredging operations in connection with a land drainage scheme. Four of the sites were dredged 3 years after the start of the survey and one control site remained undredged throughout. The results indicated that dredging operations initially reduced Salmonid densities and that there was subsequently a progressive downstream recovery, with fry densities taking up to 6 years to improve at the most downstream site. Yearling and older fish recovered to pre-drainage scheme levels more rapidly than fry.Changes in population structure were also observed at three of the dredged sites. Two sites were considerably deepened and finally contained larger numbers of older fish than prior to the drainage scheme. The opposite effect was found to have taken place at a site, which became shallower as a result of drainage works, and contained larger numbers of fry at the end of the survey.Increased fish growth rates were also observed at all sites over the experimental period, and this may have been correlated with enrichment of the river system by leaching from increased fertilizer usage within the catchments.
