Notes: Abstract Area scans with the multi-channel magnetograph at the Kitt Peak McMath Telescope provided simultaneous measures of equivalent widths in two Mn lines, continuum intensity and longitudinal magnetic field component. Observations were carried out with apertures of 2.5″ × 3.5″ arc and 1″ × 1″ arc. For the network elements, which were identified using the magnetic field as tracer, we developed relationships betweenI Continuum,W λ V Doppler and longitudinal field strength. With a minimum of assumptions it is possible to write from these observed relations an expression connecting true temperature perturbation in the line forming layers of the network to true longitudinal field strength. The results provide some constraints upon possible network models.

Notes: Abstract Young growing lambs and pigs were fed a ration containing 200 ppm of Aroclor 1254 for 35 days and then switched to “clean” feed. Blood and fat samples were collected periodically throughout the experiment and analyzed for components of Aroclor 1254 and total PCB. Several components are apparently accumulated and eliminated at different rates within each species, as seen by comparing gas chromatograph tracings, accumulation ratios and apparent rate constants of elimination. Differences in accumulation and elimination of Aroclor components, some of which were apparently caused by differences in growth rates, were also seen between pigs and lambs. Variable growth rates of different species of food producing animals are an important factor to consider when dealing with tissue distribution and residues of polychlorinated biphenyls for determination of carcass disposition, as well as accumulation of toxic concentrations in the animal body.

Notes: Abstract Growing swine and sheep were fed three dietary variations containing 20 ppm of Aroclors 1242 or 1254 for 13 to 15 weeks. Generally, Aroclor 1254 residues were higher; higher 1242 residues in swine blood, spleen, and ovary are attributed to persistent major components of this Aroclor. Some minor differences in total PCB were observed with varying diets, but peak composition did not vary. Some lower chlorinated components maintained higher levels in the blood relative to other components; other components were selectively accumulated in tissues such as fat and muscle. Blood and fat residues in sheep declined during the last weeks of feeding. Microsomal oxidase levels were elevated in response to PCB and diet in both species, but the response was greater in sheep. Sheep liver microsomes were capable of metabolizing pure analogs and components of Aroclor 1242. Major differences in Aroclor profiles can be demonstrated between swine and sheep residues and total residues can be estimated by measuring selected peaks in blood and backfat. The peaks which provide the most reliable estimate of total PCB residue vary with species and Aroclor.

Notes: Abstract Correlations between continuum intensity, velocity, and equivalent widths of two Mn i lines as observed with two different entrance apertures tend to deteriorate with improvement in spatial resolution. The KPNO multichannel magnetograph was used to make area scans at the center of the disk with entrance apertures 3.5″×2.5″ arc and 1″×1″ arc. A coherence analysis shows that this effect is caused by marked differences of fluctuations in temperature and temperature gradients as well as in the velocity structure of photospheric elements of various sizes.

Notes: Abstract The distribution of temperature and of emission measure in X-ray active regions relative to the coronal magnetic fields has been investigated. The position of maximum temperature and the position of maximum emission measure were found to lie along the magnetic neutral line, with the maximum temperature tending to lie above the position of an abrupt change in direction of the neutral line. Several simple structural models of these regions are compared to the emission measure. The total magnetic energy and the total emission measure appear to be related by a power law in the regions studied by us.

Notes: Abstract A method for calculating turbulent diffusion in the planetary boundary layer is developed based on Donaldson's second-order closure approach. The resulting partial differential equation for the turbulent mass flux has a hyperbolic character for early times when the plume scale is small compared with the ambient turbulent scale, with a smooth transition to a parabolic, gradient-diffusion-type character when the plume scale is large. Calculations are compared with available estimates from the literature for different values of Rossby number and Richardson number in the ambient atmosphere. Comparison of model predictions with laboratory simulation of diffusion in a free convection, mixed layer is good, with the model able to predict the maximum concentration rising from the ground as observed.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary A description is given of a gas coulometric procedure for the determination of hydrogen in inert gases. Hydrogen is titrated with the aid of oxygen introduced electrochemically into the gas stream. Calcium oxide-stabilized zirconium oxide ceramic serves as electrolyte. The determination of the equivalence-point follows gas potentiometrically, likewise with employment of zirconium oxide ceramic. The procedure was employed for the determination of the permeation of hydrogen through the walls of a nickel membrane in the temperature range of 180–350° C. Additional employment possibilities are pointed out.
