Description / Table of Contents: Summary In this work, we describe a new apparatus, destined to register the activity of small, or very small insects. We use an électrical photo cell. The traffic of insects, cut the very narrow light bundle, wich is focussed in the middle part of the electrical photo cell. The passage of insects gives impulses wich are magnified, counted, and finally inscribed on a paper sheet. The electrical photo cell is very sensitive in the red and infra-red. So, all visibles radiations are suppressed, and we use a very little brush of infra-red rays. The most important advantages of this apparatus are: to be very simple, and very easy to handle. We can study easily, the activity of the smallest insects (1 or 2 mm), and the activity of social insects. We can also study the action of climatory factors on the activity. The insects in experiments, wich are living in thier own nest, are never disturbed.

Notes: The practical use of synthetic records involves previous studies on field records from an original point of view; these studies consist essentially in analysing and cancelling noise, in bringing out the form of pulses and the character of seismic events, in detecting multiple arrivals. Various tools have been tested for this purpose: high multiplicity shooting, analysis of conventional well velocity surveys, mixing or selecting traces, varied filters; all these operations are facilitated by the use of magnetic recording. After several examples of these methods are given, it is shown how the results of such studies can help to make and discuss synthetic records with and without multiples. The share of multiple events and their effect on the efficiency of the later comparisons are especially treated. The authors finally present some specific examples of successful comparisons between synthetic records and field records treated beforehand. They insist on the discrepancies and on the importance of finding their origin, for the most tangible results in seismic interpretation generally appear during the analysis of such discrepancies.

Notes: Abstract A combination of breeding experiments was used to study the effects of various levels of dietary DDT on the reproductive efficiency in mammals. The results of feeding B6D2F1 hybrid mice 5, 10, or 20 ppm of DDT in the first breeding experiment showed an increase in litter size and number weaned over controls. Ten ppm of DDT caused increases over controls in the number born and alive on day 1 (P〈0.05). DDT caused decreases in the weight of pups at 5 ppm on days 15 and 30 (P〈0.05 and 0.01, respectively), at 10 ppm on day 15 (P〈0.005), and at 20 ppm on day 30 (P〈0.05). A second breeding experiment using 30, 60, or 120 ppm of DDT showed a general detrimental effect on reproduction. Thirty ppm DDT-fed animals produced fewer pups than controls (P〈0.01) at days 1, 15, and 30, and the pups weighed less than controls at 30 days of age (P〈0.05). DDT at 120 ppm resulted in fewer mice at birth and at 30 days of age (P〈0.01) than control diet. The third, fourth, and fifth breeding experiments involved diets with 0, 5, 10, and 20 ppm of DDT and with the addition of a 40-ppm level in the third and fourth studies. The data showed larger litter sizes on days 1, 15, and 30 for DDT-fed animals. This investigation indicates that 5, 10, 20, or 40 ppm of DDT in the diet often results in larger litter sizes and more pups weaned than controls. Animals fed levels of 30, 60, or 120 ppm of DDT generally produced fewer offspring than did control animals. DDT-fed mice often weighed less before weaning than control pups. Although variable responses were found, it appears from these studies that environmental levels of DDT are not detrimental to the reproductive efficiency of mice and may under certain circumstances be beneficial.

Notes: Abstract In Chlamydomonas reinhardi, the activity of the neutral phosphatase considerably increases when the cells are grown in the absence of inorganic phosphate (Pi). A comparative immunological study of cells grown on media containing Pi or not indicated that the neutral phosphatase was synthesized de novo. Ten mutants lacking the neutral phosphatase and distributed among three genetic loci (PD 2, PD 3, PD 24) were investigated for their ability to produce cross-reacting material (CRM) antigenically related to the wild enzyme. All mutants were shown to form much less CRM than the wild-type strain. It is proposed that the three genes are involved in the regulation of neutral phosphatase synthesis.
