Description / Table of Contents: 2-Bis(carboxymethyl)-amino-5-hydroxy-terephthalic Acid as an Ambifunctional Ligand in Iron(III) ComplexesFrom steric reasons the anthranilic acid -N,N-diacetic acid group and the salicylic acid group of 2-bis(carboxymethyl)-amino-5-hydroxy-terephthalic acid (H5C) cannot coordinate to the same central atom. With iron(III) H5C forms the mononuclear complex (HC)Fe(OH)2-, the central atom is fixed to the anthranilic acid N,N-diacetic acid group. In a weak acid medium (HC)Fe(OH)2- is converted into the binuclear species (HC)Fe(C)Fe(OH)4- which is of a deep red colour. In this complex the anion C5-has the function of a bridging ligand coordinating both by the anthranilic acid-N,N-diacetic acid group and by the salicylic acid group. The complex formation in the ternary system iron(III)/nitrilo triacetic acid/5-sulfo salicylic acid may be used as model for the dimerisation of the anion (HC)Fe(OH)2-.

Description / Table of Contents: Studies on the Coordinative Behaviour of Potentially Four and Fivedentate Bis(salicylidene amino)-Ligands with Ions of the 3d-Elements.Fourdentate bis(salicylidene amino)-ligands (-ONΦCH2ΦNO- and -ONΦOΦNO-, meaning of the abbreviations see text) with the centres of donor atoms connected by rigid, bifunctional residues, form polymeric complexes MeII(ONΦCH2ΦNO) and MeII(ONΦOΦNO) with cobalt(II), nickel(II), and copper(II). Among the cobalt(II) chelates the structure is uniformly tetrahedral, but the nickel(II) and copper(II) complexes contain square planar central atoms and such with a higher coordination number side by side. The potential fivedentate ligands ∼ON3PPh3NO-, -ON2O2NO-, and -ON2S2NO- differ as to their coordinative behaviour. The coordination number of the complexes Ni(ON3PPh3NO) and Co(ON3PPh3NO) is five. On the other hand the compounds Co(ON2S2NO) and Co(ON2O2NO) are tetrahedral. No coordination of the ether or sulfide group is observed. Ni(ON2O2NO) has an octahedral structure which is produced by coordination polymerisation and possibly by coordination of the ether group. The new complexes are compared with the transition metal complexes of simple salicylaldimines.
Notes: Vierzählige Bis(salicylidenamino)-Liganden (-ONΦCH2ΦNO- bzw. -ONΦOΦNO-, Bedeutung der Abkürzungen vgl. Text), deren Haftatomzentren über starre, bifunktionelle Reste verbunden sind, bilden mit Kobalt(II), Nickel(II) und Kupfer(II) koordinationspolymere Komplexe MeII(ONΦCH2ΦNO) bzw. MeII(ONΦOΦNO).

Description / Table of Contents: Influence of the Composition of Mixed Solvents on the Stability and Formation Constants of Copper (II) and Nickel(II) Complexes of Substituted 1,2-DioximesThe stability constants cK1, cK2, and cβ2 of the complexes which are formed in the systems M2+/DH2, M2+/Ac—DH2, and M2+/Et, Me\documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \mathop {\rm N}\limits^ \oplus $\end{document}—DH2 (M2+ = Cu2+, Ni2+; DH2, Ac—DH2, Et2Me\documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \mathop {\rm N}\limits^ \oplus $\end{document}—DH2 = 1,2-dioximes) are determined in water and in water-dioxane mixtures (25, 50 and 75 per cent). Because of the stabilisation of the l,2-complexes by intramolecular hydrogen bonds cK2, is always higher than cK1.On account of the decrease of the dielectricity constant the constants cK1, cK2, and cβ2, rise with increasing contents of dioxane in the mixtures. The influence of the dielectricity constant may be eliminated by considering the formation constants cK1(B), cK2(B), and cβ2(B). The individual formation constants cK1(B) of the 1,l-complexes investigated are independent of the composition of the solvent, but among the overall formation constants cβ2(B) this comes true only for the complexes Ni(Ac—DH)2, Ni(Et2Me\documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \mathop {\rm N}\limits^ \oplus $\end{document}—DH)2, and Cu(Et2Me\documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$ \mathop {\rm N}\limits^ \oplus $\end{document}—DH)2. With Cu(DH2) and Cu(Ac—DH)2 a linear relation between log cβ2(B) and the molar fraction of water is stated. This effect is attributed to a specific solvatation of the chelates Cu(DH)2 and Cu(Ac—DH)2 by water.

Description / Table of Contents: New Copper(I, II) CompoundsComplexes of the type [CuII(N∩N)2][CuICl1+x]2x (N∩N = en, pn, 2-amino picoline) are prepared from Cu(N∩N)2Cl2 and copper(I) chloride. [CuII(enac)][CuICl2]2  -  a complex with a macrocyclic cation  -  is obtained, by the reaction of Cuen2Cl2 in aqueous acetone.Diacetyl monoxime partially reduces copper(II) of Cu(NSMe)2Cl2 and in this way causes the formation of [Cu(NSMe)2][CuCl3] (NSMe = β-aminoethyl methylsulfide). On the other hand a template reaction of this oxime with Cu(NSMe)2 (ClO4)2 produces CuII(ONNSMe)(ClO4) (HONNSMe=CH3C(NOH)C(NCH2CH2SCH3)CH3), which shows a reduced paramagnetism.Basing on magnetic behaviour, i. r. and vis spectra the structure of the new compounds is discussed.

Description / Table of Contents: Oxydative Addition of Benzyl Halides to Bis(triphenylphosphine) Ethylene Nickel(0)By the oxydative addition of benzyl chloride to (Ph3P)2Ni(C2H4) at -20°C (Ph3P)2Ni(CH2Ph)Cl (II) is formed. Under similar conditions benzyl bromide gives (Ph3P)2Ni(CH2Ph)Br, but in an impure state. It is shown, that the oxydative addition to (Ph3P)2Ni(C2H4) may involve both SN2 displacement and one electron mechanismens. In benzene solution an equilibrium between (Ph3P)2Ni(σ-CH2Ph)Cl and the blue violet (Ph3P)Ni(π-CH2Ph)Cl exists. The benzyl ligands of II are split off by the reaction with ethereal hydrochloric acid, forming toluene and dibenzyl, with mercury(II) chloride, forming PhCH2HgCl, or with triphenylphosphine, forming dibenzyl and (Ph3P)3NiCl.

Description / Table of Contents: NH-acidic Behaviour of Imidazole in the Course of the Thermal Degradation of its Bis(adducts) with Transition Metal 1,3-DiketonatesThe behaviour of complexes of the type M(O—O)2(HIm)2 (O—O = 1,3-diketonate, HIm = imidazole, M = Co, Ni, Cu) in the course of the thermal degradation is different. In the case of M(acac)2(HIm)2 in the first step acetylacetone is split off. By proton transfer from imidazole to the acetylacetonato ligands the bis(imidazolates) M(Im)2 are formed, which, at higher temperatures eliminate both imidazolyl residues, probably as 1H, 1H′-(2,2′)-bisimidazolyl.The thermal degradation of M(bzac)2(HIm)2 or M(dbm)2(HIm)2 (Hbzac = benzoylacetone, Hdbm dibenzoylmethane) starts with the partial elimination of imidazole. The intermediates M(bzac)(Im) or M(dbm)(Im) are obtained, and the final product of thermal degradation is the metal oxide. The main reasons for the different thermal behaviour of the complexes M(O—O)2(HIm)2 are differences in the volatility of the 1,3-diketones and probably in the molecular structures.
Notes: Komplexe des Typs M(O—O)2(HIm)2 (O—O = 1,3-Diketonat; HIm = Imidazol; M = Co, Ni, Cu) zeigen beim thermischen Abbau ein differenziertes Verhalten.

Description / Table of Contents: 2-Pyridinamine Adducts of Transition Metal Bis(acetylacetonates) and their Reactions. Hydrogencarbonate as a Chelating Ligand in cis-(Ampy)2Co(acac)(HCO3)The reaction of cobalt(II) salts, acetylacetone (acacH), 2-pyridinamine (Ampy), and the carbon dioxide of the air in methanol affords a mixture of (Ampy)2Co(acac)2(II) and (Ampy)2Co(CO3)(H2O)2. On heating in toluene, appropriately in the presence of carbon dioxide, these complexes are converted into cis-(Ampy)2Co(acac)(HCO3) (III). Characteristic of compound III is a four-membered ring with the hydrogencarbonate as a bidentate ligand. The two Co—O distances are distinctly different (215.9 and 224.4 pm).In the complexes II and III 2-pyridinamine is a bidentate ligand coordinating by the endo-nitrogen. The Co-n-N bond lengths vary between 210.9 and 225.3 pm. Reasons are both the different trans-influence of the hydrogencarbonate or the acetylacetonato donor atoms and the π-interaction between cobalt(II) and the pyridine ring. This interaction is more significant in the cis-complex III. II and III are stabilized by a system of N—H … O- and O—H …O-bridges.With nickel(II) complexes analogous to II and III were obtained, while only the type II was characterized for manganese(II).

Description / Table of Contents: Bis(benzoylpyridin-toluensulfonylhydrazido)nickel Ni(BPSH)2 · H2O  -  Relations between Structure, Redox, and Extraction Properties of Heterocyclic Sulfonamido ChelatesThe crystal structure of Ni(BPSH)2 · H2O was determined by x-ray diffraction: monoclinic, space group P21/c (Nr. 14); a = 15.077(4) Å, b = 14.901(3) Å, c = 16.335(3) Å, β = 95.74(1)°. R = 0.047 for a total of 5564 observed reflexions. Ni(BPSH)2 · H2O has a distorted tetrahedral structure with two six-membered chelate rings, one of them with a boat from. The electron system of the building blocks CNN⊖ within the chelate rings approaches that of a diazallyl group. The result is a high electron density on the sp2-hybridized donor atom N⊖ and, as a consequence, a short Ni—N⊖-distance (1.908 or 1.924 Å). The electronic properties of N⊖ also explain the high NH-acidity of the acid H(BPSH) (pks = 9,51 in 75 per cent dioxane) and the ligand field strength of BPSH⊖ which is low compared to that of other bidentate sulfonamido ligands and which is reflected in the paramagnetism of Ni(BPSH)2 · H2O.The redox behavior of metal chelates of the type, which is represented by Ni(BPSH)2 · H2O, is caused by a building block of the ligand which is also present in bipyridyl or in the 1,4-diaza-1,3-dienes. The central atoms M11 have only the function of interference factors.

Description / Table of Contents: Addition of Transition Metal Dihalides to Acetylacetonates of Divalent Metal IonsTransition metal dihalides aMIIX2 (FeCl2, CoCl2 NiBr2 etc.) are added by the chelates MII(acac)2 under formation of binuclear complexes (THF)2MII(acac)2(aMIIX2). The octahedral and the tetrahedral centre of these compounds are connected by tridentate oxygen atoms of the two acetylacetonato ligands which are simultaneously included in four-membered rings (MIIO2aMII). The addition is combined with a deformation of the octahedral centre, as a prerequisite of a closest package of the atoms within the MIIO2aMII-ring.In the trinuclear complex (THF)2Ni(acac)2(HgCl2)2 III the interaction between the three coordination centres is weak. No structural change of the octahedral centre (THF)2Ni(acac)2 is found, but the HgCl2-groups diverge slightly from linearity (Cl—Hg—Cl 171.1°).No binuclear complexes with a central ion of the oxidation state III in the octahedral centre were obtained. One reason is the lowered donor strength of the bidentate Lewis base function of the octahedral centre [(THF)2Mn+(acac)2]n-2 with M+3 as a centralatom. Reacting systems with di- and trivalent ions prefer ionic complexes, as it is shown by the formation of [(THF)2V(acac)2][(THF)CoCl3] IV from VCl3 and Co(acac)2.The crystal structures of (THF)2Co(acac)2CoCl2II and [(THF)2V(acac)2][(THF)CoCl3] IV were determined by x-ray diffraction. II: orthorhombic-primitive; space group P212121, Z = 4; a = 967.4(2), b = 1453.4(3), c = 1715.9(4) pm; R = 0.049 for 3084 observed reflections. IV: triclinic; space group P1, Nr. 2; Z = 2; a = 871,5(2), b = 930,6(3), c = 1865,6(6) pm; α = 101,70(2), b̃ = 92,45(2), γ = 91,06(2)°; R = 0,060 für 4221 observed reflections.

Description / Table of Contents: Exchange of Metal Ions in the System Acetylacetonate/Halide/Tetrahydrofuran.As bifunctional Lewis bases metal bis(acetyl-acetonates) react with zinc(II) chloride under formation of binuclear complexes (THF)2M(acac)2ZnCl2 (M = Ni, Co, Mg). The octahedral and the tetrahedral centre of these compounds are connected by tridentate oxygen atoms of the two acetylacetonato ligands which are simultaneously part of a four-membered ring MOZnO. The addition is combined with a deformation of the octahedral centre, as a prerequisite of a closest package of the atoms within the MOZnO ring. With mercury(II) chloride the metal bis(acetylacetonates) react as tetrafunctional Lewis bases. In the trinuclear complexes (THF)2M(acac)2(HgCl2)2 (M = Co, Ni, Mg) the interaction between the three coordination centres is weak. No structural change of the octahedral centre (THF)2M(acac)2 is found, but the HgCl2 group diverge slightly from linearity.A ligand exchange was observed in the following cases: (a)Reaction of vanadium(III) chloride with Co(acac)2 under formation of [(THF)2V(acac)2][(THF)CoCl3] (transition of the acetylacetonato ligands to the higher valent central atom).(b)Reaction of magnesium halides with M(acac)2 and formation of (THF)3Mg(acac)2MX2(c)Formation von (THF)3Co(acac)(μ - C1)ZnC12 (V) by the reaction of Zn(acac)2 with cobalt(l1) chlorideIn the complex V the octahedral ccntrc of cobalt(II) is connected with the tetrahedral centre of zinc(I1) by tridentate oxygen atom of the acetylacetonato ligand and a chloro bridge (formation of the four-membered CoClZnO cycle with a closest package of the atoms).A driving force for reaction c is the formation of the stable tetrahedral OZnCI3 group. Important for the li- gand exchange according to c is the stability of the octa- hcdral MgO6 moiety and the easy formation of the tetra- hedral MO2X2 group with a transition metal ion.(THF)3Co(acac)(μ-CI)(HgCl2) (VI) is isoslruclural with V. But there is a marked diffcrence between the bond angles of the tetrahedral central atom including the termi- nal chloro ligands (120.7° for V; 143.7° for VI).The crystal structure of (THF)3Co(acac)(μ-CI)ZnCl2 (V) was determined by X-ray diffraction: monoclinic; space group P2,/n; Z = 4; a = 1 177.4(5); b = 1628.9(4); c = 1284.2(6) pm; β = 99.54(4)°; R = 6.71 % for 2160 observed reflections.
