Description: The expression of proto-oncogenes representative of several functional categories has been investigated during development of mouse male germ cells. The c-raf proto-oncogene and three members of the c-ras gene family were expressed in mitotically active stem cells, throughout the prophase of meiosis and to varying extents in post-meiotic cell types. In contrast, the nuclear proto-oncogenes c-fos, c-jun, and c-myc were specifically expressed at high levels in type B spermatogonia. High levels of c-myc and c-jun RNAs were also detected in spermatocytes early in the prophase of meiosis. The type B spermatogonia represent the last mitotic cell division before entry into meiotic prophase; therefore, these nuclear proto-oncogenes may be involved in altering programs of gene expression at this developmental transition.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Wolfes, H -- Kogawa, K -- Millette, C F -- Cooper, G M -- CA 21082/CA/NCI NIH HHS/ -- CA 28946/CA/NCI NIH HHS/ -- HD 15269/HD/NICHD NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1989 Aug 18;245(4919):740-3.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Boston, MA.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2475907" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Notes: The previously published result for the anisotropic fourth-order anharmonic thermal vibrations in KCI, determined from neutron diffraction measurements, contained an error in sign. The parameter δC1, which characterizes the appropriate term in the effective one-particle potential, should be negative, indicating the predominance of Coulombic attractive forces between the ions in determining this contribution.

Notes: Neutron diffraction measurements have been carried out on a single crystal of UO2 examined at four different wavelengths; 0.85, 1.12, 1.54 and 1.84 Å. The Bragg intensities were analysed for the wavelength dependence of extinction using both the Cooper-Rouse and the Becker-Coppens formulations. Both treatments showed that the crystal is of type I (i.e. r 〉〉 λg, where r is the domain radius, λ the wavelength and g the mosaic-spread parameter). The value of g is the same, within one standard deviation, for each wavelength; its magnitude is appreciably less than for other crystals (SrF2,ZnS,ZnTe,KCl) which have been examined by neutron diffraction at a number of wavelengths. Keeping the isotropic temperature factor for uranium fixed at 0.28 Å2, the value of 0.55 ± 0.02 Å2 is derived for the temperature factor of oxygen. There are no significant differences between the values of the extinction parameters and temperature factors obtained using the Cooper-Rouse treatment and the Becker-Coppens treatment based on either a Gaussian or a Lorentzian mosaic-spread distribution.

Notes: X-ray intensity measurements for a single crystal of sodium fluoride obtained at four wavelengths by Howard & Jones [Acta Cryst. (1977). A33, 776-783] have been reanalysed using both the Cooper-Rouse and Becker-Coppens extinction formalisms in order to study the wavelength dependence of the extinction in this crystal, since the original analysis was unable to account for the wavelength dependence of the intensities of the strong reflections. The results indicate that the crystal is intermediate between type I and type II in nature and are consistent with the wavelength dependence predicted by the theories, although the extinction is not large enough at the shorter wavelengths to provide a useful test of the validity of the theoretical wavelength dependence. The analysis also demonstrates some of the possible consequences of the use of unbalanced weighting schemes and of inappropriate models for the scattering factors.

Notes: The possible effect of surface damage on the intensity of diffracted neutrons has been investigated by a series of measurements for a plate-shaped crystal of SrF2 with the large faces alternatively polished and roughened to various degrees. No significant effects were observed until the crystal thickness was reduced to about 1.7 mm and it is concluded that inhomogeneity of the extinction properties within the volume of the crystal is likely to be a far more important effect for normal neutron diffraction experiments.
