Notes: PtSi contacts to As-doped polycrystalline silicon have been studied with respect to dopant redistribution, microstructure, and contact resistance. Arsenic was found to pileup at the PtSi-polysilicon interface upon silicide formation. Cross-sectional transmission-electron microscopy revealed columnar PtSi grains and a relatively flat interface between PtSi and polysilicon. These observations are similar to those reported for the case of PtSi formed on the single-crystal silicon. The specific contact resistance (ρc) has been investigated as a function of As concentration ranging from 8×1019 to 2×1021 cm−3 and of its dependence on substrate preclean procedures prior to Pt deposition. It was found that ρc decreases with increasing As concentration, as expected from theory. However, the contact resistance to As-doped polysilicon is about ten times higher than contacts to similarly doped single-crystal Si. The origin of this difference is attributed to the fact that not all of the implanted As was activated. Hall-voltage measurements showed that only about 10% of the implanted As was electrically active after an 880 °C, 20 min furnace annealing. Rapid-thermal annealing was then used to activate a higher fraction of the implanted As. Consequently, a much lower ρc was obtained: e.g., 7.5×10−8 Ω cm2 for samples annealed at 1050 °C for 30 s, in contrast to a value of 8.4×10−7 Ω cm2 for a furnace-annealed sample.

Notes: Abstract The decay of mass separated90Rb has been studied usingβ,γ and conversion electron spectrometers in single and coincidence modes. The half-lives of the ground state and the isomeric level have been confirmed to be 162± 3 and 258±4 s, respectively. Theγ-rays from the decays of ground state and metastable state have been identified by measuring the decay of individual photopeaks using Ge(Li) detectors. The multipolarity of the 106.6 keV isomeric transition has been determined to beM3. Separate decay schemes of the ground and metastable states are presented. The levels of90Sr are discussed in terms of the available experimental and theoretical information. Notes: Summary A technique was developed for the determination of the effective dissolved oxygen diffusivity in liquid-saturated softwood in a diffusion cell under ambient pressure. From the measurements in the temperature range 2° to 50°C, the activation energy of diffusion was found to be 4.6 kcal/mole. The diffusivity in summerwood is about one half of that in springwood. The diffusivity of dissolved oxygen through composite springwood and summerwood layers was based upon samples of two Douglas fir sapwood blocks saturated with water. In the radial and tangential directions, diffusivity was 1.4 to 2.3x10-6cm2/s, which is about 6 to 10% that of dissolved oxygen diffusivity in water. The diffusivity in the longitudinal direction is about 5.5 times that in the other two directions. The diffusivity of dissolved oxygen through liquor-saturated wood and the effect of delignification on oxygen diffusion were also determined.

Notes: Abstract A computationally stable method for the general solution of a system of linear equations is given. The system isA Tx−B=0, where then-vectorx is unknown and then×q matrixA and theq-vectorB are known. It is assumed that the matrixA T and the augmented matrix [A T,B] are of the same rankm, wherem≤n, so that the system is consistent and solvable. Whenm〈n, the method yields the minimum modulus solutionx m and a symmetricn ×n matrixH m of rankn−m, so thatx=x m+H my satisfies the system for ally, ann-vector. Whenm=n, the matrixH m reduces to zero andx m becomes the unique solution of the system. The method is also suitable for the solution of a determined system ofn linear equations. When then×n coefficient matrix is ill-conditioned, the method can produce a good solution, while the commonly used elimination method fails.

Notes: Abstract The problem of minimizing a functionf(x) subject to the constraint ϕ(x)=0 is considered. Here,f is a scalar,x is ann-vector, and ϕ is anm-vector, wherem 〈n. A general quadratically convergent algorithm is presented. The conjugate-gradient algorithm and the variable-metric algorithms for constrained function minimization can be obtained as particular cases of the general algorithm. It is shown that, for a quadratic function subject to a linear constraint, all the particular algorithms behave identically if the one-dimensional search for the stepsize is exact. Specifically, they all produce the same sequence of points and lead to the constrained minimal point in no more thann −r descent steps, wherer is the number of linearly independent constraints. The algorithms are then modified so that they can also be employed for a nonquadratic function subject to a nonlinear constraint. Some particular algorithms are tested through several numerical examples.

Notes: The characteristic flavor of hard Italian cheeses is associated with the presence of fatty acids, particularly butyric acid, liberated from milk fat during the ripening process. To ensure proper development and control of flavor, animal pregastric esterases or lipases are routinely added to the milk before coagulation of the curd. Such esterases are also used to generate flavor in enzyme modified cheese and other dairy products.Esterases from microbial sources have been investigated as agents to enhance flavor in cheese. We have found that an esterase from Mucor miehei exhibits the type of lipolytic activity needed for this application. Romano and fontina cheeses of excellent quality have been prepared by the use of this esterase. It has also been used successfully in the preparation of enzyme modified cheese, and, in turn, processed American cheese.
