Notes: Abstract Hermitean vector spaces E of infinite dimensions are considered. Let G be a subgroup of the orthogonal group of E acting on a set M. The ‘Lattice Method’ is a technique for classifying the orbits in M under G. We discuss the method in abstract terms and we illustrate it by means of three classification results showing that it is decisive to do a considerable amount of explicit calculations with vector subspace lattices.

Notes: Abstract A kairomone from adultHeliothis zea (Boddie) scales is an important factor in the host selection process ofTrichogrammapretiosum Riley. If the host density is sufficiently high (i.e., 1 egg/500 cm2) and higher), a complete coverage or solid treatment of kairomone spray may be the optimum for increasing parasitization rates, but this is not the case at lower host densities (e.g., 1 egg/2000 cm2). At the lower densities, the kairomone must be distributed in such a way as to retain the parasitoids in the target area without inhibiting their movement from one ovi-position site to the next. Simulated moth scale particles appear to fill this need since their density can be regulated to provide the optimum frequency of parasitoid stimulation and thus maximum rates of parasitization at prevailing host densities.

Notes: α-Substituted Phosphonates. XXXI. The Reaction of N,N,N′,N′-Tetramethyl Chloroformamidinium Chloride with P(III) CompoundsN,N,N′,N′-Tetramethyl chloroformamidiniumchloride (4) does not react with triethyl phosphite (TEP) or isopropyl diphenylphosphinate to give the expected bisphosphoryl derivatives 7 and 11, respectively, but primarily the monophosphorylated amidinium salts 6 and 10 respectively. The phosphine oxide 10 is stable, while 6 undergoes an elimination of ethyl chloride to the betain 8. Even under more drastic conditions the reaction of 4 or 8 with TEP does not lead to the expected bis(dimethylamino)bisphosphonate 7, but to the monoaminated bisphosphonate 1, involving a reduction step. Similar reduction has been observed under mild conditions in Michaelis-Arbusov reaction of dichloromethylenimonium chloride, yielding the expected trisphosphonate 2 and the bisphosphonate 1 as a by-product.

Notes: α-Substituted Phosphonates. 47. Splitting of P—C-Bonds from Trisphosphoryl CompoundsHexaethyldimethylaminomethyl-trisphosphonate (2a) reacts with HCl or trimethylsilylbromid/water by splitting off one phosphoryl group, giving dimethylaminomethyl-bisphosphonic acid (7). The result of methylation of 2a depends on the reagent: with methyliodide one phosphoryl group is split off, and the ammonium salt 11a is formed, while with methyl toluene sulfonate or dimethylsulfate the expected quarternary ammonium salts 10b or 10c are formed. One phosphoryl group of 10c is split off under acidic as well as alkalinous conditions: acidic hydrolysis gives the bisphosphonic acid 15, while under alkalinous conditions the known ylid 16 is formed.

Notes: O,O- and S,S-Acetals of FormylphosphoniumsaltsFor the synthesis of O,O- resp. S,S-acetals (4) of formylphosphoniumsalts, which are not known as free formylderivatives, is described a simple method, consisting in reaction of tert. phosphin with orthoester and acetyl-halide. O,O-Diarylacetals of the type 4 can be synthesized from tert. phosphine and diaryloxychlormethane.
