Notes: Summary A reconnaissance paleomagnetic study of Hispaniola shows that three igneous units in the Dominican Republic possess meaningful directions of magnetism. A Late Cretaceous tonalite, an Eocene pyroxene diorite and a Miocene andesite porphyry have been investigated. The rock material studied is fresh, and has not been affected by secondary oxidation except in the case of the andesite which is occasionally weathered and reveals some hydrothermal alteration. Alternating field and thermal demagnetization result in removal of viscous remanence in some samples, while others reveal a good stability of NRM and little change in direction. The results disclose directions of magnetization substantially different from that of the present earth's field in Hispaniola and from those obtained from contemporaneous rocks of North America. They yield paleomagnetic poles at 23.1° N, 144.9° W for the Cretaceous tonalite and at 17.4° N, 138.0° W for the Eocene diorite, the positions of which are not significantly different from each other, suggesting no change of geomagnetic field direction during the two epochs. These poles have generally similar positions to those obtained from Late Cretaceous rocks on Jamaica and Puerto Rico. The Miocene data fall into two groups, one having a direction corresponding to a pole closely coinciding with the Miocene North American pole and the other giving a paleomagnetic pole at 68.3° N, 151.9° W coinciding with the Miocene pole for Jamaica. Paleotectonic interpretation of the results suggests that like other Greater Antilles, Hispaniola has been subject to large anticlockwise rotation since Late Cretaceous.

Notes: A suite of garnet-wollastonite-scapolite-bearing calcsilicate granulites from the Eastern Ghats has been investigated to document the controls of mineral reactions during the metamorphic evolution of the deep continental crust. The rocks studied show heterogeneity in modal mineralogy and phase compositions in millimetre-sized domains. Textural relations, and the compositional plots of the phases, established that the clinopyroxene exerts a strong influence on the formation and composition of garnet in the complex natural system. P-T estimates using the vapour-independent equilibria involving garnet define a near isobaric cooling path from c. 850C at c. 5.5–5.2 kbar. The deduced trajectory tallies well with the terminal segment of the overall retrograde P-T path construed from the associated rocks using well-calibrated thermobarometers. The ubiquitous occurrence of wollastonite and scapolite in the main calcsilicate body suggests low aCO2 during peak metamorphic condition. Fluid compositions constrained from mineral-fluid equilibria of the garnet-bearing assemblages show domainal variations as a function of the compositions of the solid phases, e.g. garnet and clinopyroxene. A quantitative log/CO2-log/O2 diagram has been constructed to depict the stability of the different calcsilicate assemblages as functions of the compositions and the behaviour of these fugitive species. The results of the mineral-fluid equilibria and the quantitative fluid/rock ratio calculations, in conjunction with the topological constraints, imply vapour-deficient meta-morphism in the rocks studied. It is argued that fO2 during peak metamorphism was monitored by the ambient fO2. Subsequently, during retrogression, different domains evolved independently, whereas the fluid composition was controlled by the mineral-fluid equilibria.

Notes: RNase III, a double-stranded RNA-specific endonuclease, is proposed to be one of Escherichia coli 's global regulators because of its ability to affect the expression of a large number of unrelated genes by influencing post-transcriptional control of mRNA stability or mRNA translational efficiency. Here, we describe the phenotypes of bacteria carrying point mutations in rnc, the gene encoding RNase III. The substrate recognition and RNA-processing properties of mutant proteins were analysed in vivo by measuring expression from known RNase III-modulated genes and in vitro from the proteins' binding and cleavage activities on known double-stranded RNA substrates. Our results show that although the point mutation rnc70 exhibited all the usual rnc null-like phenotypes, unlike other mutations, it was dominant over the wild-type allele. Multicopy expression of rnc70 could suppress a lethal phenotype of the wild-type rnc allele in a certain genetic background; it could also inhibit the RNase III-mediated activation of λN gene translation by competing for the RNA-binding site of the wild-type endonuclease. The mutant protein failed to cleave the standard RNase III substrates in vitro but exhibited an affinity for double-stranded RNA when passed through poly(rI):poly(rC) columns. Filter binding and gel-shift assays with purified Rnc70 showed that the mutant protein binds to known RNase III mRNA substrates in a site-specific manner. In vitro processing reactions with purified enzyme and labelled RNA showed that the in vivo dominant effect of the mutant enzyme over the wild-type was not necessarily caused by formation of mixed dimers. Thus, the rnc70 mutation generates a mutant RNase III with impaired endonucleolytic activity but without blocking its ability to recognize and bind double-stranded RNA substrates.

Notes: Summary A simple and modified dorsal approach method has been made in the toad's (Bufo melanostictus) sciatic gastrocnemius nerve-musle preparation. This method incurs less blood loss, time consumption, nerve damage and visceral spoil compared to conventional ventral approach method.

Notes: Abstract: The dynamical critical exponent z of the Ising antiferromagnet under the constraint of a fixed zero magnetization is verified by Monte Carlo simulations to be compatible with that of the usual Glauber dynamics of model A, while for positive magnetization the exponent seems different. We also determine the diffusivity of the magnetization and finite size effects.

Notes: Abstract The angular distribution of the proton polarization has been measured between 30° and 110° in the CM system near 10 MeV laboratory energy. It provides a sensitive test of theoretical fits to the cross section angular distribution. The reaction mechanism is largely direct below 70° and evidence has been found for a deuteron-cluster transfer. Nuclear Reactions14N3(He,p),E=9.8 MeV; measuredP(E,θ), σ(E,θ); DWBA and deuteron transfer analysis; deduced dominant mechanism of forward angle amplitudes.
