Notes: Abstract Energy- and angular correlations ofα particles in coincidence with deeply inelastic fragments from32S+93Nb reactions at 313 MeV were measured and the assumption of sequentialα emission from the fragments tested. In the direction of the detected light fragment too fewα particles from the heavy fragment are observed. This pronounced anomaly is ascribed to nuclear shadowing of theα particles by the proximate light fragment.

Notes: Abstract Energy and angular correlations between alpha particles and fission-like fragments in the reaction of35Cl+Ag at 10 MeV/n have been measured. The coincident yield is dominated by two mechanisms: sequential emission from both fragments (M α =0.137±0.014) and alpha emission from the composite system prior to scission (M α =0.124±0.012). The observation of nuclear shadowing for sequential emission from the fragments allowed us to estimate the “lifetime” of the 218 MeV excited143Gd composite system as (1–3)×10−20s. It is argued that this rather long time reflects the slow evolution in shape of the composite system and might be termed “sticking time,” since statistical-model lifetimes are typically an order of magnitude shorter. Observed also are small contributions of nonequilibrium emission in the forward direction (M α =0.005±0.001) and a component displaying the characteristics of emission from the neck (M α =0.010±0.002).

Notes: Abstract After being boiled in water, the originally amorphous mixture of coprecipitated Cu(II), Mn(II) and Fe(III) hydroxides is transformed into crystalline phases, at least one of them being ferromagnetic. Since it can not be ascertained directly whether this property is due to the presence ofγ-Fe2O3 or/and a corresponding ferrite, the identification must be based on the thermally metastable nature ofγ-Fe2O3. The species with high Mn(II) contents exhibit temperature ranges in which the ferromagnetic properties disappear completely. This is the proof that the primarily acquired ferromagnetism stems exclusively from a ferromagnetic modification of iron oxide, namelyγ-Fe2O3. As a result of thermal treatment at higher temperatures, the ferromagnetism reappears, this time due to the formation of ferrites.

Notes: Summary A method for the quantitative determination of L-alanine in triglycine sulphate crystals, in the presence of excess amounts of glycine, is described. L-alanine is determined after derivatization with 4-N,N-dimethyl-aminoazobenzene-4′-sulfonyl chloride (DABS-Cl) and in the presence of DABS-valine used as the internal standard. The results obtained indicate that the method permits the determination of alanine in triglycine sulphate crystals at concentrations of about 1%.

Notes: Summary Moist buffered paper chromatography is proposed for the selection of the optimum conditions for the extraction of dabsyl derivatives of amino acids. It is shown for each individual acid and optimum pH value exists at which the distribution coefficient reaches a maximum. The optimum pH values can be easily determined from chromatographic data. The linear correlation between the static distribution coefficients and the RM values permit the direct calculation of the distribution coefficient from the chromatographic data.

Notes: Thin-layer gradient elution chromatography is a convenient technique for separation of very complicated mixtures; in some cases the gradient technique can be replaced by continuous development. The two techniques are compared in practice by using them to separate a mixture of dabsyl derivatives of amino acids.

Notes: Experience gained in the choice, introduction, and application of CAD systems in plant engineering. Computer-aided design in plant engineering is not restricted to technical or chemical engineering calculations but is also used for the creation of graphic design documents. A standing working party „Computer-aided plant design“ of DECHEMA covered the topic of computer-aided design systems in its sessions of 1982. The presentations are reported here in short form. After an introduction to the problems concerned, the selection, preparation, and use of computer-aided design systems are discussed.
