Notes:
Three major techniques have been developed for the solid phase extrusion of polymers. These are ram extrusion, hydrostatic extrusion and die-drawing. After an introductory review of the three techniques, a more detailed discussion will be presented of recent studies at Leeds University on hydrostatic extrusion and die-drawing. In the case of hydrostatic extrusion an analysis of the mechanics of the process has been undertaken. This analysis places particular emphasis on understanding the thermally activated nature of the flow process in the solid phase, and its pressure dependence. It will be shown that the analysis suggests advantages for die drawing over hydrostatic extrusion (or ram extrusion). The paper concludes with an account of the structure and properties of the oriented products, especially in linear polyethylene where considerable improvements in properties have been achieved.
