Abstract This article contains tests for the direct effects of inflation on household saving. Empirical results with cross-country data from five OECD countries indicate that both unanticipated and anticipated inflation affect the household savings ratio. This latter result, which furthermore turns out to be robust in terms of aggregation and additional variables, is clearly at variance with some previous analyses, particularly those of Deaton.
