    Notes: Investigations on the reproductive biology of Puntius sarana an indigenous species and Tiiapia remialli (melanopleura) an exotic, in an ancient man-made lake, Parakrama Sarnudra (Sea of Parakrama), in Sri Lanka, carried out from February 1978 to May 1979 are presented. The overall female to male ratio in T. rendalli and P. sarana were 1.1:1.0 and 1.5:1.0, respectively. Considerable deviation from the mean ratio was observed and are attributed to their spawning behaviour and migrations. In the larger size groups in T. rendalti males were dominant while the reverse was observed in P. sarana. Both species were found to breed through out the year, with well defined peaks in the case of P. sarana which were coincidental with the main rainy seasons. Both species are multiple spawners, fecundity ranging from 760 to 6160 in T. rendalli with length and weight varying from 18.8 to 25.8 cm and 126 to 380 g, respectively. In P. sarana. with a length of 23.8–38.0cm and a weight of 180–792 g, fecundity ranged between 16,000 and 290,000.

    Notes: The digestibility of the aquatic macrophyte Hydrilla verticellata by the Asian cichlid, Etroplus suratensis was estimated using three indigenous markers viz. hydrolysis resistant organic matter (HROM), crude fibre (CF) and hydrolysis resistant ash (HRA). In the fodder HROM showed the least variation and HRA the highest. The recovery of HRA in the faeces was always higher than 100% whereas HROM was the nearest to 100%. The total digestibility varied between 34·6% and 51·9%, and the digestibility estimates were higher when HRA was considered as the marker. The overall protein and lipid digestibility varied between 59·2%–70·9% and 65·0%–70·1 % respectively. It is suggested that HROM is a better reference marker in comparison CF and HRA. Daily variation in protein digestibility ranged from 51·2% to 81·8%.

    Notes: The gastric evacuation time (GET) and the passage of food through the intestines was investigated in Sarotherodon mossambicus (Peters) fry of two size groups, viz. 0·2–1·0g and 1·0–3·0g, in response to five diets. In the experiments voluntary feeding was adopted and markers were not used. The passage of food through the stomach was described by the exponential model.The GET increased with body weight for any particular diet, with one exception. The GET ranged from 290 min to 1104 min in fry of 1·0–3·0 g on Diet 2. There was evidence to indicate that the GET was negatively correlated to the specific gravity of the diet.The passage of food through the intestines showed a consistent trend from diet to diet; e.g. the algal diet being moved into the intestine in ‘finite’ quanta as opposed to the others. The importance of these observations and the implications of the dependence of the GET on the specific gravity of the diet in the use of markers in digestibility studies are discussed.

    Notes: The biology of grey mullet, Mugil cephalus L., adult populations in a coastal lagoon in Sri Lanka is presented. The percentage of grey mullet catches increased with increasing salinity. The larger fish were found in the deeper areas and the relationship of total length to depth was L= 8.4602e0.0058D where L= total length and D= depth (cm). The overall female to male ratio was 0.95 : 1.0 and seasonal variation in the sex ratio is considered to be caused by the differential timing in the spawning migrations of the two sexes. Males mature at 34.0 cm and females at 31.5 cm. The main spawning season was between January and May and it is hypothesized that the breeding season is geared to utilize the favourable time period, for growth of fry, in the lagoon. Grey mullet sheds its eggs in batches. Fecundity varied from 0.45 to 4.2 million in fish ranging in length from 32 to 56 cm and in weight from 0.7 to 2.2 kg. Fecundity was significantly correlated to body length and weight and gonad weight.
