UV-Spectroscopical Investigations on the Existence of Monoiodine Amine in Liquid AmmoniaSolid, polymeric nitrogentriiodide-1-ammonia does not decompose under an atmosphere of gaseous ammonia up to room temperature, when light is excluded. In contact with liquid ammonia, however, the substance slightly dissolves and in solution decomposition occurs more or less rapidly depending on temperature yielding ammonium iodide and nitrogen. UV-spectroscopical investigations at low temperature of this solution now confirm earlier assumption of Jander that the compound dissolved in liquid ammonia is monoiodine amine, H2N—I. Absorption bands at 270 nm (∊max = 250) and at 310 nm (∊max = 160) can be assigned to this instable iodine nitrogen compound. The decomposition is first order in rate. At -36°C the half-life period is 25 hours.
Notes:
Ordnung. Bei -36°C beträgt die Halbwertszeit 25 Stunden.
