Notes: Abstract The article presents a holistic approach to studying and applying crop protection in agricultural systems A theoretical framework of integrated pest management (IPM) is presented that allows an understanding of pest population processes on a whole-agroecological-system basis The need for and emergence of holistic research on agroecosystems is discussed, as are the current trends in ecological theory and pest management

Notes: Abstract The chemical environment of pest species may be considered a habitat susceptible to management Management may be by means of manipulation of the environment of the pest for population suppression or for enhancement of natural enemies Examples of each are reviewed here Chemical stimuli influencing the behavior of phytophagous insects include host plant originated stimuli and pheromones The latter, especially sex pheromones, have proved most successful as tools for manipulation of pest population dynamics Factors influencing search behavior of natural enemies include habitat characteristics such as crop, associated plants and plant assemblages, host plant characteristics, influence of associated organisms, and characteristics of the searching entomophage Recent studies have shown potential for simultaneous management of a pest species and enhancement of natural enemies using pest pheromones

Notes: Abstract Telenomus remits Nixon is a parasitoid that attacks egg masses ofSpodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith). Increased host-seeking behavior was elicited fromT. remus females in Y-tubes, Petri dish, and greenhouse bioassays byS. frugiperda female abdominal tips as well as (Z)-9-tetradecene-1-ol acetate and (Z)-9-dodecene-1-ol acetate.

Notes: Abstract Trichogramma pretiosum Riley females exhibit success-motivated searching after oviposition. The stimulatory effect of contact with host eggs makes host-egg density an important factor in determining the appropriate strategy for behavioral manipulation, using kairomones, that simulate host seeking, in biological control programs. Host eggs can be used, in conjunction with kairomones or by themselves, to improve the performance of these important beneficial insects.

Notes: Abstract Volatile chemicals emanating from an excretion (apparently meconium) and abdominal tips of femaleHeliothis zea (Boddie) moths mediated increased rates of parasitization ofH. zea eggs byTrichogramma pretiosum Riley. A blend of synthetic chemicals, consisting of hexadecanal, (Z)-7-hexadecenal, (Z)-9-hexadecenal, and (Z)-11-hexadecenal, which has been identified as the sex pheromone of and from the abdominal tip of femaleH. zea moths, also increased rates of parasitization ofH. zea eggs byT. pretiosum in greenhouse experiments. In addition, parasitization ofH. zea eggs by wildTrichogramma spp., in field plots of cotton,Gossypium hirsutum L., treated with a similar blend of chemicals, in Conrel fibers, was more than double that in untreated plots.

Description: Directions for designs and powerplant configurations for V/STOL aircraft are explored. The Harrier is the only V/STOL aircraft in service, having performed for over 12 yr. Rolls-Royce has studied engines with powered lift separation from forward propulsion, and engines with composite lift/propulsion modes, resulting in concentration on vectored thrust using rotating or deflected nozzles. The necessity for higher combat performance creates a need for higher specific thrust for supersonic flight (Mach 2), which is achievable with plenum chamber burning. The core flows are exhausted through separate nozzle systems for independent control. Intake in a V/STOL follows a short path and results in nonuniform flow, and testing is described to account for the effects of nonuniform static pressures and temperatures.
