Description: Irradiation of 2,2-bis(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)hexamethyltrisilane in hydrocarbon solution produces tetramesityldisilene, which can be isolated as a yellow-orange solid stable to room temperature and above in the absence of air. Like the olefins of carbon chemistry, tetramesityldisilene undergoes addition reactions across the silicon-silicon double bond.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉West, R -- Fink, M J -- Michl, J -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1981 Dec 18;214(4527):1343-4.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17812259" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: When a solution of collagen molecules, at neutral pH and moderate ionic strength, is warmed from 4 degrees to 30 degrees C, a spontaneous self-assembly process takes place in which native-type collagen fibers are produced. Events occurring during thermally induced fibrillogenesis process can be monitored, in aqueous media and in real time, by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic techniques. Tentative assignments of observed spectral bands are given.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Jakobsen, R J -- Brown, L L -- Hutson, T B -- Fink, D J -- Veis, A -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1983 Jun 17;220(4603):1288-90.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6857249" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Extracellularly applied N-succinimidyl [2,3-3H]propionate was used in vivo to covalently label intra-axonal proteins in the rat sciatic nerve. This technique permitted a unique view of axonal transport of proteins independent of biosynthesis. The proteins detected in slow anterograde transport (1 to 2 millimeters per day) correspond to cytoskeletal proteins described in previous papers. The slowly retrogradely transported component (3 to 6 millimeters per day) was composed primarily of a single protein with a molecular weight of 68,000.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Fink, D J -- Gainer, H -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 1980 Apr 18;208(4441):303-5.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6154312" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Notes: Summary Experimentally observed deviations from the classical rate laws of radical polymerization in solution can be treated as solvent interactions concerning the growth step. The theory of hot radicals and the theory of donor-acceptor complexes are based on these considerations. It had been shown that the experimental data rather fit the former theory. However by a modification of the latter theory with respect to termination reactions of the different radicals a remarkable equivalence between these different views is exposed.

Notes: Abstract Affine planes which admit a point transitive collineation group and at least one affine elation are considered. Such a plane is shown to be (A,ℓ∞)-transitive for some point A on ℓt8 and to be a translation plane if at least two distinct elation centers exist. If the plane has at least (order)1/2+1 distinct elation centers and the group generated by the elations is nonsolvable then the plane is either Desarguesian or Lüneburg-Tits.

Notes: Abstract We describe a design for a 120-keV, 2.3-MW,3He neutral beam injector for use on a D-3He fusion reactor. The constraint that limits operating life when injecting He is its high sputtering rate. The sputtering is partly controlled by using an extra grid to prevent ion flow from the neutralizer duct to the electron suppressor grid, but a tradeoff between beam current and operating life is still required. Hollow grid wires functioning as mercury heat pipes cool the grid and enable steady state operation. Voltage holding and radiation effects on the acceleration grid structure are discussed. We also briefly describe the vacuum system and analyze use of a direct energy converter to recapture energy from unneutralized ions exiting the neutralizer. Of crucial importance to the technical feasibility of the3He-burning reactor are the injector efficiency and cost; these are 53% and $5.5 million, respectively, when power supplies are included.

Notes: Abstract The available enthalpy data on UO2, ThO2, PuO2, (Th, U)O2, and (Pu, U)O2 have been analyzed and equations have been derived to fit the data. Phase transitions were found in UO2, ThO2, (Th, U)O2, and (Pu, U)O2. The high temperature PuO2 data were too scattered to determine whether a phase transition exists. Above the phase transition temperature, the enthalpy data were fit with a linear equation. Enthalpy data for PuO2 and ThO2 below the phase transition temperature were fit with two-term equations whose contributions are due to phonons and thermal expansion. For UO2 below its phase transition, a term for an electronic contribution was added to this basic equation. Below the phase transitions for (Th, U)O2, enthalpy data were fit by a mole average of the equations used to fit the ThO2 and UO2 data below their phase transitions; however, the mole average equation was not valid for 90 and 92% ThO2 in the mixed oxide. Since it was found that mole averages of the PuO2 and UO2 data do not fit the (Pu, U)O2 data, these data were fit with an equation of the same form as that that used for UO2.

Notes: Abstract Street marijuana, commercial cigarettes and pipe tobaccos were studied for the presence of fungi and actinomycetes associated with hypersensitivity pneumonitis. Aspergillus species and thermophilic actinomycetes were isolated from the smoking materials. In addition, Aspergillus fumigatus spores were isolated from marijuana smoke, indicating the potential hazard involved in developing serious disease. Precipitin antibodies against fungi, particularly Aspergillus, showed a higher prevalence in marijuana smokers, whereas only very few cigarette smokers and nonsmokers demonstrated antibodies to fungi. Cigarette smokers and nonsmokers showed more or less similar prevelance of antibodies against thermophilic actinomycetes.

Notes: The amount of in-cage and out-of-cage recombination of initiator radicals has been measured by recovering the recombination products of simultaneous decomposition of an unlabeled and a deuterium-labeled initiator. The occurrence of recombination products generated from both an unlabeled and a deuterium-labeled initiator fragment, which can be monitored in a mass spectrometer, indicate out-of-cage recombination. It turned out that in the course of decomposition of dibenzoylperoxide in benzene, biphenyl was not produced by direct recombination of the phenyl radicals originally generated, but rather by interaction with benzene. Upon decomposing azoisobutyronitrile in various solvents, however, both in-cage recombination and out-of-cage recombination were observed. When small amounts of styrene were added to such systems, the initiator radicals tended rather to react with styrene than to undergo out-of-cage recombination.
