Notes: Abstract A fast response frequency-modulated interferometric polarimeter was designed and constructed with a single 28 μm H2O laser for high density plasma diagnostics. This newly developed modulation system employs an electro-magnetically driven movable mirror to achieve the modulation frequency beyound 1 MHz for about 100 μs duration. The movable mirror performance is studied experimentally in detail. The determination of the Faraday rotation angle is based on the zero-crossing method for the observed beat signals produced by two kinds of rotating plane-polarized waves. The feasibility of the polarimeter constructed was verified in experiments of a field-reversed thetapinch plasma.

Notes: Abstract A high-power CW 27.972 μm water vapor laser has been constructed in order to use as a light source of an interferometer for plasma diagnostics. The laser consists of 220 cm length and 2.0 cm small bore Pyrex glass discharge tube, semi-confocal resonator and Michelson coupler. From the measurement of cavity detuning curves, it is found that two waveguide modes, EH11 and EH21 oscillate. The increase of the output power is found to become more than seven times larger by adding He(50%)−H2(50%) mixed gas. Under the optimum condition, the maximum output power of 65 mW or the output power per unit cavity volume of 83 μW/cm3 is obtained.

Notes: Abstract We show, by using the Liapunov method, that the Lorenz model perturbed by Gaussian white noise is ergodic for any Rayleigh number. Our theory confirms two properties which have been found by numerical calculation. We also discuss the ergodicity of some other randomly perturbed dissipative systems, a one-dimensional laser, and a homopolar disk dynamo model of the geomagnetism.

Notes: Abstract We present a linearization procedure of a stochastic partial differential equation for a vector field (X i (t,x)) (t∈[0, ∞),x∈R d ,i=l,...,n): ∂ t X i (t,x)=b i (X(t, x)) +D, ΔX i (t, x) + σ i f i (t, x). HereΔ is the Laplace-Beltrami operator inR d , and (f i (t,x)) is a Gaussian random field with 〈f i (t,x)f j (t′,x′)〉 = δ ij δ(t − t′)δ(x − x′). The procedure is a natural extension of the equivalent linearization for stochastic ordinary differential equations. The linearized solution is optimal in the sense that the distance between true and approximate solutions is minimal when it is measured by the Kullback-Leibler entropy. The procedure is applied to the scalar-valued Ginzburg-Landau model in R1 withb 1(z) =μz - vz 3. Stationary values of mean, variance, and correlation length are calculated. They almost agree with exact ones ifμ ≲ 1.24 (ν 2θ 1 4 /D 1 1/3:=μ c . Whenμ⩾μ c , there appear quasistationary states fluctuating around one of the bottoms of the potentialU(z) = ∫b 1(z)dz. The second moment at the quasistationary states almost agrees with the exact one. Transient phenomena are also discussed. Half-width at half-maximum of a structure function decays liket −1/2 for small t. The diffusion term∂ x 2 X accelerates the relaxation from the neighborhood of an unstable initial stateX(0,x) ∼ 0.

Notes: Abstract A high-power CW 27.972 μm water-vapor laser has been developed for interferometric and polarimetric measurements of plasmas. The maximum output power and the power density in the cavity of the laser with 2.0 cm bore and 220 cm length reach 85 mW and 109 μW/cm3, respectively. An interferometer using this laser is constructed and its performance is examined as a study on polarimetric method of magnetic field measurement. Preliminary interferometric experiments are also carried out on a compact toroidal plasma with field-reversal configuration.

Notes: Abstract For the noninvasive monitoring of the beat-to-beat systolic and diastolic pressure and pressure waveform in the human finger, a new automated instrument was designed. This measurement is based on a principle called the vascular unloading technique. Using a hydraulic servocontrol system, the vascular volume change caused by intra-arterial pressure change can be compensated by applying counter pressure to maintain a constant vascular volume in the unloaded state. In this state the controlled counterpressure instantaneously follows the intra-arterial pressure. In this instrument all the necessary procedures, such as the setting of the reference value for the servocontrol, control of the servogain, processing and displaying of the data on a recorder, were carried out automatically. The simultaneous comparison of data with direct measurements and a few examples of the indirect pressure recordings by this instrument are shown and the principles, operation and evaluation of this method are described. This instrument was shown to permit the nonivasive and accurate tracking of instantaneous arterial pressure and to perform acceptably over a wide range of arterial pressure.

Notes: Abstract A three-channel frequency-modulation telemetry system for the noninvasive measurement of cardiac output, rate of respiration, e.c.g. and basal transthoracic admittance of the unconstrained human subject is described. Tetrapolar admittance plethysmography has been employed to obtain the transthoracic admittance and its variations corresponding to the cardiac cycle and respiratory changes. Pulse duration modulation has been used in the transmitter system. The nonlinearity of the system is less than ±2·0%. The telemetry transmitter has a range of about 100 m, it weights approximately 200 g and is contained in a box measuring 150×100×50 mm. The batteries used provide a continuous life of 20 h. The system has been used to obtain data from normal subjects in different postures with breath hold and during normal respiration.
