Notes: Summary A dissociation between inhibition of RNA synthesis and cell lysis was observed when thymocytes of adrenalectomized rats were incubated with high concentrations of pregn-4-ene-11β-ol-3, 20-dione and pregna-1,4-diene-11β-ol-3,20-dione. In contrast, no dissociation of these effects was found with the typical glucocorticoids cortisol and corticosterone, nor with their 1,4-diene analogs under the same conditions.

Notes: Abstract It is shown that the massicot/litharge ratio of the lead monoxide yielded from the thermal decomposition of ground samples of PbCO3 decreases from 1 to 0 by increasing the grinding time of the above salt. The conclusion has been drawn that the PbO keeps a sort of “memory” of the lattice imperfections of the PbCO3 specimen used as precursor. Both the crystalline size and the root-mean square strain data reported in the present paper support this conclusion.

Notes: Abstract Kinetic analysis has been performed on TG and DTG diagrams of the forward reaction MnCO3⇌ MnO + CO2, recorded at different pressures of CO2 ranging form 2.6. 10−4 Pa to 26.6 kPa. The results obtained show that this reaction follows a first-order kinetic law, independently of the CO2 pressure used in carrying out the experiments. On the other hand, the activation energy increases on increase of the CO2 pressure, from 117 kJ/mol up to an asymptotic value of 292 kJ/mol at about 26.6 Pa. This finding cannot be explained by considering the influence of the reverse reaction of formation of MnCO3, for under the described experimental conditions the ratio $$P_{CO_2 } /P_{equil} $$ to zero. A mechanism that takes into account the adsorption of CO2 on the phase boundary has been proposed in order to interpret the results.

Notes: Abstract Pure and MgO-doped zirconia gels have been decomposed in vacuo at temperatures up to 800° C in a furnace attachment to the D1B neutron spectrometer at Institute Laue-Langevin (I LL). The recorded neutron line profile data were analysed to obtain a measure of the crystallite size of the product phase and the growth of the crystallites with increasing temperature; phase changes occurring during heating were also monitored. Additionally, the gel powders were decomposedin situ in a high temperature attachment to a Philips diffractometer and X-ray diffraction traces were obtained during progressive heating of the samples and after thermal cycling over a range of temperatures. The peak profiles were analysed to provide both crystallite size and strain values in the decomposed powders. The crystallite size values obtained from the two studies are compared with those obtained from a parallel small angle neutron scattering (SANS) study of the same gels after calcination.

Notes: Abstract We report in this paper a study of the photoconductivity of a set of Horizontal Bridgman semi-insulating GaAs samples. In order to obtain steady-state photoconductivity spectra, we measure the photocurrent by a procedure that consists in thermally erasing the typical GaAs photomemory. The thermal evolution, between 80 and 300 K, of the photoconductivity is also obtained. The data so obtained allow us to distinguish clearly a diversity of behaviours between the photoelectronic properties of the different samples, which could not be observed with the conventional photoconductivity technique. The way in which chromium and oxygen impurities are introduced in GaAs, as well as their charge states, seem to be strongly influenced by native defects and background impurities, which play an important role in the compensation mechanism.

Notes: Summary For the investigation of intermolecular interactions in adsorption from solution, which are the basis of selectivity in molecular liquid chromatography (LC), it is convenient to use the LC method itself. Using this method the Henry's constants, K1, and other thermodynamic adsorption characteristics of hydrocarbons and of a series of polar substances on hydroxylated silica surface were determined from aqueous solutions. On the basis of the adsorption of hydrocarbons from water solutions the structure of the chemically modifying layers formed by different hydrocarbon groups on the silica surface is considered. The role of conformation ability of straight-chain bonded phases is demonstrated. Hydrocarbons are adsorbed on the hydroxylated silica surface more strongly from aqueous solutions than from solutions in saturated hydrocarbons and their retention increases with the increase in the number of carbon atoms in the molecule. The retention in LC is determined by the intermolecular interaction of the solute and solvent molecules with the adsorbent, as well by the contribution of the intermolecular interaction, between the solute and the solvent. The thermodynamic characteristics of adsorption of cymarin from water-ethanol solutions on hydroxylated silica gel and on silica gel surface modified by diphenylsilyl groups is compared. The solubility of silica gel modified by diphenylsilyl groups at different composition of water-ethanol eluent at different temperatures is investigated.

Notes: Summary The chemical modification of silica surface using dichlorosilanes with methyl and phenyl groups and triethylamine as donor in the liquid phase was investigated. This modification leads to a dense coverage of the silica surface by the organic functional groups. Liquid chromatography permits the determination of the thermodinamic characteristics of intermolecular interactions of different molecules during adsorption from solutions on the modified surface of the silica. Silica gels modified with dichlorosilanes containing phenyl groups, possess high selectivity (α) and capacity (k′) for the cardiac glycosides G-strophanthin, K-strophanthoside, K-strophanthin-β and cymarin using water-alcohol mixture as the mobile phase, and the selectivity and capacity is much higher than observed on silica gels modified with methyl groups only.
