Notes: Corn starch extruded at 32.9, 29.2, 24.5, 22.5, 15.9 and 14.2% moisture was analyzed for expansion ratio, enzyme susceptibility, water solubility index, water absorption index, degree of gelatinization, paste viscosity and heat of gelatinization. A model system based on the combination of raw, gelatinized and dextrinized starch was used to represent the physicochemical properties of the extrudates. Reducing extrusion moisture content resulted in a progressive change from gelatinized-like to dextrinized-like properties. Maximum gelatinization was observed at about 28-29% moisture. Below 20% moisture, dextrinization becomes predominant during high- shear cooking-extrusion. Scanning electron micrographs also validate the assumptions of the model.

Notes: The catalase activity and the isozyme pattern of the metalloenzyme system superoxide dismutase (SOD) have been determined in pea (Pisum sativum L., cv, Lincoln) leaves of different ages (apical, middle and lower), during several stages of plant development. Pea seedlings were grown in full nutrient solution in a phytotron. Catalase activity was determined polarographically, and superoxide dismutase isozymes (Mn-SOD, Cu, Zn-SOD I and Cu, Zn-SOD II) were separated by acrylamide gel electrophoresis and their relative amounts quantified by densitonietry. The results indicate that the relative amounts of SOD isozymes are slightly different in leaves of different ages during plant growth and, interestingly, each molecular form of SOD shows a clearly distinct pattern during plant development. These changes in the relative percentages of SOD isozymes could be due to the induction of the distinct molecular forms of SOD by the metals Mn, Cu and Zn, translocated to the different leaves as a result of plant development. The relative percentage of the Mn-SOD isozyme showed a similar pattern to that of catalase activity, suggesting a possible link between these two metalloenzymes at subcellular level, both cooperating to remove the toxic effects of O-2 and H2O2.An additional conclusion is that before a certain metalloenzyme can be used as a marker to assess the plant micronutrient status, it is essential to have a detalled study of its activity pattern in leaves of different age during plant development.

Notes: Summary A father with a fragile 16(q22) has a son with a de novo balanced translocation 1;16. Both the fragile site and the break point at chromosome 16 are similar (q22). The question of whether the fragile site can cause a structural chromosome abnormality at the same point is discussed.

Notes: Summary The in vitro release of acetylcholine in slices of rat brain tissue was followed in the presence of tityustoxin and ouabain. At low ouabain concentrations, the release of acetylcholine caused by both ouabain and tityustoxin, was additive. At higher ouabain concentrations the additive effect of tityustoxin and ouabain on the release of ACh was no longer observed.

Notes: Abstract Using a high resolution nucleolar silver staining technique, we have studied the distribution of silver grains at interphase and mitosis. The nucleolar fibrillar centers and the fibrillar component, as well as the mitotic nucleolar organizing region (NOR), are argyrophilic. Of the NOR structures, the fibrillar component is transcriptionally active, but the fibrillar centers and the mitotic NORs are not. Treatment with cycloheximide (CHM), which indirectly impairs rRNA synthesis, does not affect the pattern of silver staining. The currently assumed correlation between activity and Ag-NOR staining appears questionable. On the other hand, all Ag-NOR-stained structures contain decondensed chromatin, whereas condensed portions of this chromatin are not stained by silver. In CHM-treated cells there is apparently no chromatin condensation accompanying inhibition of rRNA synthesis.

Notes: Abstract A manganese-containing superoxide dismutase (EC 1.15.1.1) was purified to homogeneity from a higher plant for the first time. The enzyme was isolated fromPisum sativum leaf extracts by thermal fractionation, ammonium sulfate salting out, ion-exchange and gel-filtration column chromatography, and preparative polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Pure manganese superoxide dismutase had a specific activity of about 3,000 U mg-1 and was purified 215-fold, with a yield of 1.2 mg enzyme per kg whole leaf. The manganese superoxide dismutase had a molecular weight of 94,000 and contained one g-atom of Mn per mol of enzyme. No iron and copper were detected. Activity reconstitution experiments with the pure enzyme ruled out the possibility of a manganese loss during the purification procedure. The stability of manganese superoxide dismutase at-20°C, 4°C, 25°C, 50°C, and 60°C was studied, and the enzyme was found more labile at high temperatures than bacterial manganese superoxide dismutases and iron superoxide dismutases from an algal and bacterial origin.

Notes: Abstract The influence of the crystallization temperature on the melting behaviour and crystalline structure of polyoxetane (PTO), poly(3,3-dimethyloxetane) (PDMO) and poly(3,3-diethyloxetane) (PDEO) has been studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and X-ray techniques. When PTO is crystallized by cooling from the relaxed melt state, only the orthorhombic modification is obtained. However, PDMO and PDEO can be crystallized in two different modifications depending on crystallization temperature. The effect of the substituents in the stability of main chain conformations in crystalline state is discussed.

Notes: Abstract In the last years we have gained some experience in the diagnostics of small-scale structures, both on the interpretative and on the observational point of view. We report here the conclusions and the suggestions for future developments attained in two main fields of interest.

Notes: The simultaneous solution of all the equations for a general system of interlinked, multistaged separators is considered. The interlinks may be simple streams or reciprocal streams, and a particular separator may have bypassing streams (for example, pumparounds). Algorithms are developed that automatically arrange the linearized equations so that for a Newton-Raphson type of solution procedure using, for example, the Naphtali-Sandholm technique, a minimum or nearly minimum number of nonzero blocks occur outside the tridiagonal band so that computational memory and time requirements are minimized. The nonzero and nonidentity blocks are stored in a single vector of variable dimension.

Notes: Conclusions 1. The values of the activation energies (E) and preexponential factors (A) for reactions of ozone with stilbene and allyl chloride have been determined. 2. It has been found that the values of E for the solutions are close to the upper limit of the published values for the gas phase, while A exceeds the corresponding values by 1–3 orders.
