Notes: Abstract In late summer (Antiprod I cruise, March 1977), antarctic waters of the southern part of the Indian Ocean contain low amounts of dissolved Vitamin B12: 1 ng l-1 on average. However, higher concentrations were recorded in two areas: in the subantarctic convergence zone and between 50° and 57°S, with values greater than 3,5 ng l-1. Despite nutrient-rich waters, primary production was low and the phytoplankton sparse. Abundance of diatoms was related, to a certain extent, to the concentration of Vitamin B12. An experimental approach (Antiprod II cruise, February and March 1980) was applied to (1) artificially enriched natural sea water, and (2) cultures of two diatom species isolated from antarctic waters, Nitzschia turgiduloides and Chaetoceros sp. The experiments demonstrated that antarctic diatoms in general do not require any of the three investigated vitamins for growth. However, Vitamin B12 has a slightly stimulating effect on growth. This may explain the observed relation between phytoplankton density and vitamin concentration in the Antarctic Ocean. This experimental approach elucidates the minor role of vitamins in the primary production of antarctic waters and provides indirect evidence of the major importance of turbulence as a limiting factor.

Notes: Abstract The mucous feeding filter of Chaetopterus variopedatus (Renier and Clapérede) was collected as curled-up mucus and food balls ready for ingestion, and as stretched out mucus films on copper grids, introduced in the mucus bag of actively feeding individuals. By light-, scanning electron-and transmission electron microscopy the mucus film was found to consist of two crossing arrays of parallel filaments with a spacing of 0.76±0.96 μm in one direction and 0.46±0.12 μm (mean±SD) in the other. This film should effectively retain particles with a diameter down to about 0.5 μm, and let through most smaller particles. The possibility of affinity binding to hydrated mucous filaments, even at the molecular level, is also discussed.

Notes: [Auszug] Standard theory of stellar structure and evolution indicates that the Sun, as a whole, is currently in a very stable and quiscent state. Slow structural changes only occur as a significant fraction of the solar hydrogen is converted into helium within the nuclear furnace located at the very centre ...

Notes: [Auszug] NEXT June 11, nature will provide one of her most spectacular sights, a total eclipse of the Sun. The eclipse will be of long duration and visible from accessible land sites where there is every prospect of good weather ? a favourable combination that has not occurred since June 1973 and will not ...

Notes: A computer-based method of X-ray quantitative phase analysis which utilizes the whole powder diffraction pattern including overlapping diffractions is described. The measured intensities are compared with those obtained from the calculations based on single-crystal investigations. Three examples are included showing the analyses of artificially prepared mixtures of quartz, micas, chlorites, carbonates and kaolinite.

Notes: Abstract A new technique — the photoacoustic spectroscopy with microphone detection has been successfully applied to the studies of spectral sensitivity of silver halide emulsions. Regardless of the fact that the sensitivity of photographic emulsions is greater or comparable with the detectivity of real photoacoustic transducers (i.e. the photoacoustic cell with microphone or piezoelectric transducer), absorption-like spectra of strongly diffusive and nontransparent silver halide emulsions can be readily recorded. Applications of this new technique for the studies of silver halide emulsions bears full potential advantages of photoacoustic spectroscopy. Particularly we demonstrate priority of the new technique over the conventional photographic sensitometry or reflectance spectroscopy both in qualitative and quantitative manner. Photoacoustic measurements of photochemical decomposition rates are shown and suggestions for the measurements of excitation energy transfer efficiencies are given. The results clearly show a unique applicability of the technique in fundamental as well as industrial research and process control of the photographic emulsion production.

Notes: Abstract The leading term of the electron density perturbations around a harmonic point source moving with a superthermal velocity through a maxwellian plasma is studied for distances that tend to zero. Pronounced asymmetry is found, the field being concentrated mainly in a conical region downstream behind the source (the Cherenkov cone).
