Notes: In diffusion-grown layers of compounds with the orthorhombic FeB- and ZrSi2-type structures a pronounced texture is present which is rotationally symmetric with respect to the direction of diffusion. In FeB-type structures a [101]-fibre texture is observed for ZrSi and HfSi and a [100]-fan texture for TiSi and ZrGe. In ZrSi2-type compounds the b axis is always perpendicular to the direction of diffusion; different compounds, however, show different textures: a [010]-fan texture for ZrSi2, a [100]-fibre texture for HfSi2 and a 〈101〉-fibre texture for ZrGe2. The textures are explained in terms of preferential diffusion along specific crystallographic directions which can be derived from the crystal structures. At high temperatures a second texture component has been observed in HfSi layers and in layers with the ZrSi2 structure. This second component can be considered as a recrystallization texture and can be derived from the original texture by a rotation of the crystallites of 20–25° around a simple crystallographic direction. The existence of a so-called TiGe phase with the FeB structure in the temperature region 1070–1270 K is questionable. Only Ti6Ge5 has been produced and this compound showed a [001]-fibre texture.

Notes: Abstract In displacement reactions of the type pA+BqX→qB+ApX, two main forms of the layer sequence have been found in the reaction layer, namely, A/ApX/B/BqX and A/B/ApX/BqX. In this paper it is argued that the thermodynamics of the system, more specifically the dependence of the activity of element X on the mole ratio between the elements A and B, determines the initial layer sequence. Various morphological variants of the two basic types may develop because of the kinetics. The prediction of the layer sequence and morphology made on the basis of this theory has been verified on a number of oxidic and sulfidic systems. It is, however, pointed out that these predictions also can be applied to purely metallic ternary systems and to other types of reactions.

Notes: Abstract This paper examines the relaxation of planetary surface features in the size range from one to several hundred kilometers. For this purpose a new type of computational method is used. This involves the assumption of axial symmetry and supposes also that motion takes place in a vertical direction only. Although this later assumption may seem restrictive, comparison with results computed by other techniques show that it produces relatively exact results. Furthermore, the method may be easily applied to a wide variety of situations in which for example the viscosity is a function of position time, shear-gradient, and even previous history, as well as cases in which inertial terms are important. In this paper the results of applying the method to two particular problems are briefly described — relaxation under a highly depth-dependent viscosity condition, and the relaxation of lunar mascons.

Notes: [Auszug] SEVERAL theories have been proposed for the origin of the shapes of lunar dumbbell and ellipsoidal glass globules. The rotational theory1 assumes that they solidify while rotating in free fall above the lunar surface, the rotation giving the elongation in form. A second theory imagines ...

Notes: Abstract The reaction32S+126Te has been used to determine theg-factor of theT 1/2=35 ns yrast isomeric state in154Er through the time-differential spin-rotation method. The experimental valueg=+0.017±0.003 agrees with an aligned two-neutron ν(i13/2,h9/2) main configuration and supports an 11− spin-parity assignment for the isomeric state. Unambiguous spin-parity assignment for upper energy yrast states can be deduced. The properties of the isomeric state are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Using the reaction175Lu(19F, 6n) theg-factor of the188Hg isomeric state (J π=12+,T 1/2=135 ns) has been measured with the TDPAD method. The experimental value g=−0.168(10) supports the interpretation of an almost pure (vi13/2)−2 configuration for this isomer.

Notes: Abstract This paper suggests that Saturn's magnetic field is, in part, responsible for the very fine-scale radial features, or ringlets, seen in the ring-system. The planet's dipole field interacts with slight radial variations in plasma density, and the operation of an instability segregates the magnetic flux and plasma in the ring-plane into narrow alternating zones. We suggest that this mechanism may act by itself to give rise to the inner ringlets. At greater radial distances we believe it amplifies gravitational resonances.
