Notes: A branched pore kinetic model for aqueous phase activated carbon adsorption is presented in which the carbon particle is separated into rapidly and slowly diffusing regions. The model was developed to overcome problems arising from a single rate parameter analysis and is shown to describe experimental data well. In addition to very different rates of transport in the two regions, parameters estimated by regression analysis indicated differences in the adsorptive characteristics.

Notes: Vacuum sublimation of cadmium sulfide for manufacture of thin film solar cells was analyzed. The sublimation unit consisted of a two chamber cylindrical source bottle having a rate control orifice and exit nozzle. Coupled heat and mass balance equations were solved using appropriate rate equations for flow in the free molecular-to-viscous transition regime. The model equations predicted that heat transfer has a significant effect on sublimation rate. Experiments were carried out over a range of temperatures with several rate control orifices and exit nozzles. Quantitative agreement between measured rates and those calculated from the model equations was obtained.

Notes: DC planar magnetron sputtering has been used to deposit gold Schottky barrier electrical contacts on n-type GaAs. The electrical character of the contact was determined from current-voltage (I-V) and electron-beam-induced voltage (EBIV) data. These data showed that the Schottky barrier height of magnetron sputter-deposited contacts was lower than for vapor deposited contacts. The barrier-height was a function of the deposition rate for electronically isolated substrates, and was dependent upon both the surface treatment prior to contact deposition, and upon doping density and post-deposition heat treatment. These effects are discussed in terms of particle irradiation of the surface during contact deposition.

Notes: Vinyl chloride-ethylene copolymers containing from 1.0 to 5.5 wt.% ethylene were synthesized and compounded with DOP plasticizer at levels of 0, 5, 10, 20, 30, and 40 parts per hundred parts of resin. Physical property tests indicated that, as an internal plasticizer, ethylene was 2 to 3 times more efficient than DOP in the range studied. An examination of room temperature modulus as well as brittleness also indicated that crystallinity was still apparent in all copolymers.

Notes: Extracts derived from rat liver and Phaseolus leaves are shown, by collision-induced dissociation of [MH]+ ions generated by fast atom bombardment mass spectrometry, to contain cytidine 3′,5′-cyclic monophosphate and guanosine 3′,5′-cyclic monophosphate respectively, and not the 2′,3′-cyclic isomers. Interference peaks, expected to be common to all mass-analysed ion kinetic energy spectra of ions generated by the fast atom bombardment process from glycerol-based matrices are identified. It is shown that unequivocal identification of cytidine 3′,5′-cyclic monophosphate can be made at the microgram level. Attempts to derive a quantitative procedure based on using different cyclic nucleotides as internal standards were unsuccessful due to the poor solubility of these compounds in the matrix system.

Notes: The vicinal proton coupling constants were obtained for some 6-membered ring unsaturated heterocyclic compounds. The R values and ring dihedral angles were determined and found to be consistent with half-chair conformations. Relative to saturated heterocyclic compounds, the effect of the sulfur atom on ring puckering was attenuated. However, an increase in ring puckering resulted from the sulfone group and was attributed to torsional energy.

Notes: The unimolecular dissociation reactions for [C7H7O]+ ions generated by fragmentation of a series of precursor molecules have been investigated. The metastable kinetic energy values and branching ratios associated with decarbonylation and expulsion of a molecule of formaldehyde (CH2O) from the [C7H7O]+ ions are interpreted as the hydroxybenzyl and hydroxytropylium [C7H7O]+ not interconverting to a common structure on the microsecond time-scale. In addition, similar measurements on protonated benzaldehyde, methylaryloxy and phenyl methylene ether [C7H7O]+ ions are interpreted as the dominant fraction of these decomposing ions having unique structures on the microsecond time-scale. These results are supported by experimental heats of formation calculated from ionization/appearance energy measurements. The experimental heats of formation are determined as: hydroxybenzyl ions, 735 kJ mol-1; hydroxytropylium ions, 656 kJ mol-1; phenyl methylene ether ions, 640 kJ mol-1; methylaryloxy ions 803 kJ mol-1. The combination of the results reported in this paper with previously reported experimental data for stable [C7H7O]+ ions (see Ref. 1, C. J. Cassady, B. S. Freiser and D. H. Russell, Org. Mass Spectrom.) is interpreted as evidence that the relative population of benzyl versus tropylium [C7H7O]+ ion structures from a given precursor molecule is determined by isomerization of the parent ion and not by structural equilibration of the [C7H7O]+ ion.
