Description / Table of Contents: On the Stereoelectronic Requirements of 1,2-Rearrangements of Vinyl CationsThe triflates 8, 9, 12, 17, 19, and 23 have been synthesized to investigate their solvolysis products in absol. 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol (TFE) (Table 1). The kinetics of the solvolysis in 50% ethanol have been measured as well. The rate constants give a straight correlation line when we apply an approximate Taft's equation, from which we deduce that the solvolyses take place by a kc mechanism; one exception is 12, as it reacts with S-O bond cleavage. We also deduce that the value of ρ* does not depend on steric factors. Relations between structure and rearrangement of vinyl cations are discussed. Mechanisms for the formation of reaction products are proposed.

Notes: The copolymerization of β-pinene with styrene oxide (SO) and β-pinene with N-vinylpyrrolidone (VP) was investigated by using SnCl4 in dichloromethane diluent at low temperature. Monomer reactivity ratios were evaluated for both copolymers at -80°C; these are r1(SO) = 2.979 and r2(β-pinene) = 0.002 and r1(VP) = 0.096 and r2(β-pinene) = 0.294.

Notes: Summary MDCK cells (epithelioid of renal origin) form monolayers which are structurally and functionally similar to transporting epithelia. One of these similarities is the ability to form occluding junctions and act as permeability barriers. This article studies the junctions of MDCK monolayers formed on a permeable and transparent support (a disk of nylon cloth coated with collagen) by combining two different approaches: (i)Scanning of the electric field: the disk is mounted as a flat sheet between two Lucite chambers and pulses of 20–50 μA cm−2 are passed across. The apical surface of the monolayer is then scanned with a microelectrode to detect those points where the current is flowing. This shows that the occluding junctions of this preparation are not homogeneous, but contain long segments of high resistance, intercalated with sites of high conductance. (ii)Freeze fracture electron microscopy: the junctions are composed of regions of eight to ten strands intercalated with others where the strands are reduced to one or two ridges. The sites of high conductance may correspond to those segments where the number of junctional strands is reduced to 1 or 2. It is concluded that the occluding junctions of MDCK monolayers are functionally and morphologically heterogeneous, with “tight” regions intermixed with “leaky” ones.

Notes: Summary MDCK cells form monolayers which have many of the properties usually found in transporting epithelia. The present article is devoted to the study of the structural and functional polarization of MDCK cells, which is one of the central features of transporting epithelia. The results show: (i) that MDCK monolayers transport 2.6 μmol hr−1 cm−2 of sodium in the apical to basolateral direction; (ii) the passive flux of this ion is relatively large (20.3 mole hr−1 cm−2), which is a characteristic of leaky epithelia; (iii) a large fraction of the penetration of sodium into the cells proceeds through an amiloride-sensitive channel, and the exit is operated mainly by a ouabain-sensitive pump; (iv) the net transport of sodium from the apical to the basolateral side agrees with the asymmetric labeling of the pumps with3H-ouabain; (v) this asymmetric labeling agrees, in turn, with a higher concentration of intramembrane particles (IMPs) in freeze-fracture replicas of the basolateral side of the plasma membrane; (vi) the structural polarization of confluent MDCK cells is also revealed by the location of microvilli, occluding junctions, and pinocytotic vesicles; and (vii) the presence of a continuous ring formed by actin microfilaments visualized by immunofluorescence under the lateral aspect of the plasma membrane that may be related to the distribution of the occluding junctions, which act as barriers separating apical from basolateral membrane components.

Notes: Abstract The development of parthenocarpic fruits of Pisum sativum L. cv. Alaska was induced by the application of different plant-growth regulators in aqueous solution to the emasculated ovaries in untopped plants. At least one compound in each of the groups of auxins (2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid), cytokinins (benzyladenine), and gibberellins (gibberellic acid) was found active. Gibberellic acid (GA3), however, was the only substance which produced pods similar to those of fruits with seeds. The length of the pods obtained by GA3 was a linear function of the logarithm of the concentration of GA3 in the solution. The effect of GA3 (at a concentration which produced 50% of the maximum pod length) was enhanced by a simultaneous application of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid. Abscisic acid (ABA) counteracted the effect of GA3 and of topping. The results suggest that gibberellins and ABA may exert a major regulatory control in natural fruit-set. Peas can be used for the assay of fructigenic activity and is an advantageous material for the study of the mode of action of gibberellins on fruit-set.

Notes: Abstract The influence of removing the apical shoot and different leaves above and below the flower on the fruit-set of unpollinated pea ovaries (Pisum sativum L. cv. Alaska) has been studied. Unpollinated ovaries were induced to set and develop either by topping or by removing certain developing leaves of the shoot. Topping had a maximum effect when carried out before or on the day of anthesis, and up to four consecutive ovaries were induced to set in the same plant. The inhibition of fruit-set was due to the developing leaves and not to the apex. The third leaf above the first flower, which had a simultaneous development to the ovary, had the stronger inhibitory effect on parthenocarpic fruit-set. The application of different plant-growth regulators (indoleacetic acid, naphthylacetic acid, 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, gibberellic acid, benzyladenine and abscisic acid) did not mimic the negative effect of the shoot.
