    Notes: Internal cracking and microvoids are shown to form during room temperature storage of polycarbonate samples that have previously been exposed to boiling water. These microcracks or microvoids are actually disc-shaped pockets filled with water. This formation occurs due to the creation of water super-saturation conditions by cooling water-saturated specimens from 100°C to room temperature. As a result, water phase-separation, clustering, and microvoiding result and lead to deterioration of the mechanical properties. Visual healing of the microcracks is also sometimes observed at room temperature, especially under a dry atmosphere. Water from the water-filled pockets diffuses through the polycarbonate matrix to the external dry environment; the very thin emptied pockets then close and visually heal. This paper provides experimental data for the microvoiding process and clarifies the special mechanism of cracking/healing in polycarbonate samples.

    Notes: This paper shows that the tensile properties of high-density stiff foams having cellular structures consisting of spherical voids can be described and predicted by simple rules.     Notes: A history dependent solubility model is generalized in accordance with the Dual Mode Sorption Theory to take into account a history dependency of effective water diffusion coefficients in epoxy resins, based on hypothesized microcavitational damage due to the combined effects of temperature and sorbed moisture. Sorption data presented in a different paper are analyzed in the light of a transport model in which part of diffusing molecules are completely immobilized in the formed microcavities. The nature of the hypothesized damaging process is in agreement with the diffusion coefficient depressions and solubility increases experimentally found and theoretically predicted by the model.

    Notes: Recovery experiments above Tg have been performed on glass bead and short glass fiber polystyrene composite sheets obtained from extrusion and subsequent hot drawing. A shift procedure has been applied to recoil data using the Williams-Landel-Ferry (WLF) equation with the same values of C1 and C2 used for unfilled polystyrene. The data reported show that an improvement of the dimensional stability of a drawn thermoplastic material can be obtained by adding very low volume percentage of fibers. Moreover, all the recoil data have been reduced to a unique generalized master curve which takes into account the draw ratio, the filler content, and geometry, using a fractional distance from equilibrium as a measure of the recovery. These results indicate that the presence of the filler does not affect the recoil kinetics of the polymeric matrix.

    Notes: The rheological and thermal properties of composites of polystyrene (PS) and two liquid crystalline low-molecular-weight additives have been studied. Both additives act as plasticizers as evidenced by decreases in the glass transition and the melt viscosity. In addition both are miscible with PS over a broad range of concentrations. Partial phase diagrams of the two systems are presented and discussed.

    Notes: High-density structural foams and their fiberglass-reinforced versions have been characterized in tension, and the results were analyzed. The tensile modulus and strength of the nonreinforced foams can be described by the modified Kerner equation and a modified Nicolais-Narkis equation, respectively. The modulus of the reinforced foams can be predicted by using the concepts of the quasi-isotropic laminate theory. The temperature sensitivity of the reinforced foams is markedly reduced and the impact failure in a falling ball test is localized, and energy absorption is accomplished by the formation of numerous small cracks. Fiber reinforcement of foams improves also the heat sag resistance and reduces the coefficient of thermal expansion.

The presence of short fibers reduces strongly the recoverable strain of the oriented material. A simple model able to predict the equilibrium values of the length reversion ratio of glass bead composites is developed and compares well with the experimental data.

    Notes: The main role of the amino hydrogen bonding in the plasticization of water-penetrated epoxy resins has been tested on a diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA) epoxy cured with different amounts of triethylenetetramine (TETA). Samples were characterized both by calorimetric and moisture diffusion techniques. The increased water solubilities and glass transition temperature depressions observed for the samples cured with an increased content of amino hardener were attributed to the high hydrophilic character of the amine. Theoretical models, based on the analysis of the free volume and entropy of the water saturated polymer, have been used to test the nature of the polymer-diluent interactions. The comparison between the experimentally determined and theoretical values of the wet glass transition temperatures indicates how the free volume better describes the behavior of the low amino content resins while the entropy model become effective at increasing amino contents. Moreover, the actual water solubilities have been determined by thermal cycling of water-saturated samples of different composition and used in the cited models.

    Notes: The cure behavior of commercial grade TGDDM-DDS mixtures of compositions ranging from 10 to 100 phr of hardener and the thermal polymerization of the epoxy component are analyzed by means of differential scanning calorimetry. The kinetic parameters and heats of reaction determined in isothermal and dynamic scans suggest that DDS primary amine addition and epoxide etherification dominate the cure reactions. The primary amine epoxide addition is characterized by overall heat of reaction (referred to the weight of the epoxy component) of 255 cal/g and by an activation energy of 16.6 kcal/mol. The corresponding values for the etherification reaction are, respectively, 170 cal/g and 41 kcal/mol. A method of derivation of the epoxide conversion from the heat evolved in DSC thermal scans of these systems is presented. The results are in good agreement with independent IR determinations. The steady shear and oscillatory viscosity measurements and the calorimetric analysis of the isothermal cure at 140°C, 160°C, and 180°C of a TGDDM-DDS mixture containing 35 phr of hardener indicate that gelation is principally governed by the primary amine addition. The gelation limits calculated in isothermal tests by combining the calorimetric analysis and the theory describing the nonlinear copolymerization of the tetrafunctional TGDDM with an essentially difunctional DDS were in good agreement with the values experimentally determined through rheological measurements.

    Notes: Poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate)-(PHEMA) has been prepared by polymerizing in presence of different types of water-soluble additives, at various amounts, which were removed by swelling in water. Mechanical properties of swollen samples have been measured and analyzed by using the classical theory of rubber elasticity. Water permeability measurements were also performed to detect the presence of micropores and to determine the type of water transport. It has been shown that it's possible, using different types and amounts of additives, to obtain a wide range of physical properties of swollen PHEMA as required for various biomedical applications.
