Notes: Detection of Fragment Genesis in the Mass Spectrometer. V. Amino Acid Sequence Analysis by DADI/MIKE, Linked Scan and Collisional Activation Mass Spectrometry. Aliphatic Amino AcidsThe amino acid sequence in tripeptides and tetrapeptides has been analyzed by DADI/MIKE and B/E-‘linked scan’ spectrometry, as well as by collisional activation in the first and second field free region of a mass spectrometer embodying the inverse Nier-Johnson geometry. Collisional activation enhances the intensity of fragment ions.

Description / Table of Contents: Complexes of Germanium Dichloride with 1,2-Bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane: A Semi-Chelate and A Double-Ylide1,2-Bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane (dppe) reacts with the germanium dichloride dioxane complex depending on the stoichiometric ratio to give a 1:2 dppe-bridged bis(germylene) complex (1) or a 1:1 complex (2) that shows equilibration of both phosphorus atoms in 31P-NMR. The crystal structure of 2 has been determined from single crystal X-ray data. The compound crystallizes with 8 units dppe-GeCl2· 1/2 C6H6 in a unit cell of symmetry A 2/a-C2h6 in a monoclinic system. The dppe-GeCl2 molecules contain a novel semi-chelating type of coordination of the dppe ligand [distorted Ψ-trigonal bipyramidal coordination at Ge11 with an exceptionally long distance Ge-P(apical)]. 2 thus represents an intermediate structure between chelate complex and phosphorus ylid.

Notes: Critically branched polyurethanes of varying molecular weight were prepared from poly(oxypropylene)triol and methylenedi-p-phenylene diisocyanate with and without solvent. The static/dynamic light scattering from DMF solutions of these samples was measured. The results were discussed in terms of the classical (Flory-Stockmayer, FS) and percolation theory of gelation; the bulk-polymerized sample obeyed the FS process, whereas the solution-polymerized samples were better described by the percolation process.

Notes: The polyaddition reaction of bisphenol A with the diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A is treated statistically on the basis of cascade theory to describe the branching process. The chain lengthening step is based on the reaction of the epoxide functional group with the phenolic hydroxyl group and leads to the formation of a 1,3-diphenoxy-2-propanol link. The peculiar feature of this polyaddition reaction is the possibility of further addition of an epoxide to a secondary hydroxyl group to form branched molecules. This branching reaction does not, however, lead to a loss of hydroxyl groups since a new secondary hydroxyl group is created when an epoxide functional group reacts with a secondary hydroxyl group. Closed analytic expressions are derived for the weight-average (Mw) and number-average (Mn) molecular weights in terms of the mole ratio R = mb/ma and the extents of reaction of the functional groups α(phenolic hydroxyl), β(epoxide), and p(branching), i.e. the probability p that an epoxide group has reacted with a secondary hydroxyl group, where mb and ma are the mole fractions of the diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A and of bisphenol A, respectively. Consideration of a simple kinetic mechanism shows that α,β and ρ are related to the ratio b = k2/k1, where k1 and k2 are the rate constants of the chain lengthening step and the chain branching step, respectively. The equations derived for Mw and Mn as a function of a α allow the determination of the branching probability p (or the kinetic rate constant ratio b). An equation for the gel point (Mw → ∞) is given which states a relationship between αc and pc where the subcript c refers to the critical point of gelation. Thus location of the gel point and measurement of αc, either directly or by extrapolation on samples taken prior to gelation, enables p to be measured.

Notes: Synthesis and Reactions of 2-Aryloxy-s-trithianes2-Aryloxy-s-trithianes 4 had been prepared from 1-tosyl-imino-1-SIV-1,3,5-trithiane and phenolates. - By self-condensation of 4 1,5-bis-(trithianyl)-1,3,5-trithiapentane 5 and triphenyl-orthoformate 7 are formed, accompanied by further products, which had been isolated in pure state and identified unambiguously by H-n.m.r. and mass-spectra. In the presence of acids the 2-aryloxy-s-trithianes 4 react with nucleophilic aromatic compounds such as phenoles, N,N-dimethylaniline, pyrrole, indole, and thiophenes to give the C-trithianylated products. With mercaptanes 2-alkylthio-s-trithianes are formed.

Notes: A method is described for the gas-chromatographic determination of the diastereomers of vitamin K1 (phylloquinone) in the form of their dihydro dimethyl ethers. The reported method of derivatization and chromatographic analysis in conjunction with optical rotation measurements are useful approaches for characterization of vitamin K1 samples with respect to their origin.

Notes: N-nitrosodiethanolamine is believed to be a weakly carcinogenic chemical, and as it occurs widely - in consumer products for example - it may constitute a significant hazard to humans. However, the chemical evidence concerning the identity, purity and properties of N-nitrosodiethanolamine is incomplete, and this casts some doubt on the basis of the current interest in this substance. In the present paper a purification procedure of synthetic N-nitrosodiethanolamine based on high-performance liquid chromatography is given. Other fractionation procedures such as gas liquid chromatography, ambient pressure column chromatography and distillation are shown to be inadequate. The purity and identity of purified N-nitrosodiethanolamine is established by means of electron impact and field ionization mass spectrometry, including metastable defocusing and collision induced decomposition techniques. Furthermore, 1H and 13C nuclear magnetic resonance and, to a lesser extent, infrared and ultraviolet spectroscopy are used. Deuterium labelled analogues of N-nitrosodiethanolamine and the parent diethanolamine are employed in rationalizing the results obtained.

Notes: Preparation of Bis(trimethylsiloxy)germanium(II) and -lead(II)Bis(trimethylsiloxy)germanium(II) (1) is obtained in more than 80% yield from the germanium dichloride-dioxane complex with sodium trimethylsilanolate, bis(trimethylsiloxy)lead (II) (2) is formed in more than 70% yield from yellow PbO with trimethylsilanole. Both compounds are fairly soluble in all inert organic solvents, they are associated by bridging siloxy groups.
