    Description: The group's CCN counter is described. It is a static, horizontal, parallel plate thermal gradient diffusion chamber. Examples of the application of the CCN are presented and include the CCN spectra measured during the winter of 1978-79 near Elk Mountain, Wyoming. Comparisons of droplet concentrations derived from upwind CCN spectra are covered.

    Description: Two instruments were used to size dry aerosols for the CCN experiments: the Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) instrument which uses an electrical mobility analyzer to separate the aerosol size fractions and a diffusion chamber to grow and count the particles and the University of Wyoming (WYO) aerosol monitoring system. Measurements from these two systems were usually found to be in agreement during the CCN Workshop. Two examples are presented to compare aerosol size distribution measurements of the two instruments: experiment 8 (monodisperse NaCl) and experiment 27 (polydisperse AgI). Differential (dN/dR) and cumulative plots are shown for both instruments for experiment 8 and experiment 27; also shown are Aitken particle measurements for comparison.

    Description: It is well known that Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) is capable of precise time synchronization at subnanosecond levels. This paper deals with a demonstration of clock synchronization using the MKIII VBLI system. The results are compared with clock synchronization by traveling cesium clocks and GPS. The comparison agrees within the errors of the portable clocks (+ 5 ns) and GPS(+ or - 30 ns) systems. The MKIII technology appears to be capable of clock synchronization at subnanosecond levels and appears to be very good benchmark system against which future time synchronization systems can be evaluated.

    Description: MITES (Miniature Interferometer Terminals for Earth Surveying) observations conducted on December 17 and 29, 1980, are analyzed. It is noted that the time span of the observations used on each day was 78 minutes, during which five satellites were always above 20 deg elevation. The observations are analyzed to determine the intersite position vectors by means of the algorithm described by Couselman and Gourevitch (1981). The average of the MITES results from the two days is presented. The rms differences between the two determinations of the components of the three vectors, which were about 65, 92, and 124 m long, were 8 mm for the north, 3 mm for the east, and 6 mm for the vertical. It is concluded that, at least for short distances, relative positioning by interferometry with GPS can be done reliably with subcentimeter accuracy.

    Description: The theory of this method of characterizing cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) over the critical supersaturation range of about 0.01% to 0.2% was reviewed, and guidelines for the design and operation of IHC's are given. IHC data are presented and critically analyzed. Two of the four IHC's agree to about 40% over the entire range of critical. a third chamber shows similar agreement with the first two over the lower part of the critical supersaturation range but only a factor of two agreement at higher supersaturation. Some reasons for the discrepancies are given.

    Description: The Pollak and the TSI 3020 counters agreed to within about 10% at concentrations below 1000 cu cm, whereas above that concentration, substantial systematic differences were observed. When the test aerosol was monodisperse and the CCN counters were operated at supersaturations that should nucleate all the aerosol, the Pollak counter read about 6% to 20% lower than the CCN counter in the concentration range from 250/cu cm to 1800/cu cm. The TSI 3020 read about 20% lower than the CCN counter at concentrations less than 1000/cu cm, and a factor of about two higher at concentrations above 1000/cu cm.

    Description: Four devices were operated for the detection and characterization of cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) and fog condensation nuclei (FCN). In chronological order of development, the CCN devices are the conventional continuous-flow diffusion chamber (CFD), the rapid-cycle CCN spectrometer, and the instantaneous CCN spectrometer. The FCN detection device is an isothermal haze chamber (IHC). These four instruments are discussed and general comments on their performance at the workshop are given.

    Description: The effect of varying the size of the gap voltage and spacing on the performance of a tandem pair of microchannel plates (MCP) is investigated. Results show that increasing the voltage in the gap increases the gain of the pair and also produces a narrower Gaussian pulse-height distribution, although beyond a critical voltage the gain of the channel plate pair is found to plateau. A model is developed which explains the nonlinear gain behavior of individual microchannels and the behavior of the electron cloud emitted from the first MCP as it spreads out between the two MCPs and hits the surface of the second. The model calculates the plateau voltage as a function of the gap size, the gain of each MCP, and the diameter of the channels, and is found to show good agreement with the observed results. It is concluded that interplate gaps of up to several millimeters can be accommodated without a significant degradation in pulse-height distribution.

    Description: A simple iterative algorithm for reconstructing the images of compact radio sources from very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) measurements of visibility amplitudes and 'closure' phases is described. The method makes efficient use of redundant sampling of spatial frequencies by making a global solution of phase 'closure' equations for a complete set of observations.
