    Notes: A new surface pretreatment for the preparation of wall-coated open tubular (WCOT) glass capillary columns has been evaluated. This technique involves the application of a non-extractable layer of Superox™-4, a 4,000,000 MW polyethylene glycol, to the glass surface as a pretreatment and deactivation agent. Unlike other polyethylene glycols, Superox-4 is stable at high temperatures (〉 300°C) in the absence of oxygen, coats smoothly onto a bare glass surface and resists droplet formation. WCOT columns (SE-54, Carbowax 20M, and SP-2250) prepared using this technique are compared to columns prepared using a modified Grob [2,3] BaCO3 procedure. The Superox-4 pretreated columns were equal or superior in quality to the BaCO3 pretreated columns, based on the appearance of an activity standard and the effective theoretical plates (Neff) per meter. Chromatograms showing practical application of the WCOT columns prepared using both methods is given.

    Notes: Two unusual sulphur-containing amino acids have been isolated from urine of a baby who died with major physical malformations and failure of growth and development. Sensitive mass spectrometric methods were used to identify the nanomole quantities of the compounds available as S-(2-carboxypropyl)-cysteine and S-(2-carboxypropyl)-cysteamine. Incubation of fibroblasts in either [14C]valine or [35S]cysteine resulted in radioactive labelling of the compounds, suggesting their origin from conjugation of methacrylic acid with cysteine and subsequent decarboxylation of the cysteine conjugate. Specific assay of methacrylyl-CoA hydratase is needed for final proof that this is a new inborn error of that enzyme, but these findings and parental consanguinity make this very likely. It seems possible that methacrylic acid or one of its derivatives may have caused the malformations present in the baby.

    Notes: Blends of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and a copolyester of bisphenol A-terephthaloylisophthaloyl (PAr) (2:1:1) have been studied both before and after transesterification. The physical blends exhibit phase separation in their amorphous states: a pure PET phase and a mixed PAr-rich phase. In spite of this phase separation, PET crystallinity in blends, normalized to PET fraction, surprisingly goes through a maximum at 25% PAr content. The transesterfied copolymers are noncrystallizable and exhibit a single Tg between those of starting polymers, PET and PAr.

    Notes: The presence of low molecular weight molecules in a polymeric matrix often has a marked effect on material properties. Knowledge of specific penetrant distributions and component interactions is important for an elucidation of structure-property relationships, plasticization phenomena, and any modification of structure induced by the presence of penetrants. The sorption-mode characteristics of water, methanol, and ethanol in Nylon 6 films have been investigated by the application of the differential sorption method. The sorption and diffusion behavior were interpreted in terms of clustering theory with suitable account being made for penetrant molecular size and hydrogen-bonding capability. The examination of transport and mechanical properties of these films indicates a pronounced dependence of those properties on the concentration of penetrants. The effect of penetrant cluster formation at characteristic concentrations of sorbed penetrant is to decrease the concentration dependence of both diffusion and mechanical relaxation processes in the case of alcohols. The onset of water clustering apparently only affects the mechanical relaxation process. The samples were further characterized by DSC, X-ray diffraction and density measurements to detect any significant changes in the structure of Nylon 6 induced by the penetrant conditioning.

    Notes: The effects of polymer composition and penetrant molecular size on the solubility and diffusivity of alcohol vapors in a series of well characterized isoprene-methyl methacrylate copolymers and their corresponding homopolymers has been investigated at room temperature. The rate of sorption behavior changes progressively from Fickian to non-Fickian, to Case II to “Super Case II” transport with increasing methyl methacrylate (MMA) content in the polymers. The equilibrium solubility of the alcohols increases linearly with increasing penetrant molecular size for polymers which are above their glass transition temperature and decreases for polymers which are below their Tg. The solubility also initially increases as an approximately linear function of MMA content in the copolymers. At about 55 mole percent MMA, the sorbed concentration either levels off or passes through a maximum depending on the size of the penetrant. The apparent “diffusion coefficients” (D) decrease with increasing molecular volume of the penetrants. An exponential dependence was found between these two variables for PMMA. These “diffusion coefficients” also decrease exponentially with increasing MMA content in these polymers. However, at 55 mole percent MMA the copolymer undergoes a rubber to glass transition at the temperature of the experiments. On this basis, it is suggested that the hindered chain segmental motion contributes to the sorption process in addition to strictly thermodynamic considerations. Free volume theory can be used to explain the mechanism of diffusion through the rubbery polymers while the “hole” theory can be applied to explain the transport of the penetrants through the glassy polymers.

    Notes: Representative polyolefin films were exposed to UV radiation from light sources having different intensities and spectral distribution including the quartz mercury arc fluorescent lamps, xenon arc, and sunlight. Films exposed were polyethylene, polypropylene, and sensitized polyethylene. The oligomer fractions supported microbial growth, but the high polymers gave minimal or no growth. It was concluded that photooxidative degradation of polyolefins does not per se induce progressive attack by microorganisms. Oligomers present originally in the polymer are augmented by those produced by photooxidation. These oligomers support growth if separated from the polymer matrix. These observations explain some of the contradictory reports in the literature concerning the microbial degradation of sensitized polyolefins.

    Notes: A continuous process involving simultaneous saccharification and fermentation of liquefied starch has been developed using Zymomonas mobilis. Amyloglucosidase retention and cell recycle have been effected by using an Amicon hollow-fiber membrane system with a MW cutoff of 5000. Relatively high productivities of up to 60 g L-1 h-1 have been achieved at ethanol concentrations of 60-65 g/L. The system also offers the potential for reduced enzyme requirements for saccharification.

    Notes: Certain aspects of moisture sensitivity for selected polyurethane-polyether block copolymers were investigated. Exposure to ambient conditions tended to raise the impact velocity for projectile penetration and to decrease the brittleness of these materials. High values of relative humidity, whether applied immediately or after a time delay, led to softening and ductile response of an initially brittle formulation. Immediate desiccation of the brittle formulation caused retention of hardness and brittleness, whereas after prior humidification, desiccation removed much water but did not reverse the prior transition to ductile response to impact. Measurements were made of water sorption and desorption exhibited by this brittle formulation.
