Notes: The rates of desorption of carbon dioxide from supersaturated water solutions into pure carbon dioxide or nitrogen gas stream were measured at 15,25, and 35°C in a baffled agitated vessel with a flat gas-liquid interface operated in a continuous manner. The volumetric liquid-phase mass transfer coefficients for the bubbles generated in the agitated liquid and the enhancement factors of the volumetric liquid-phase mass transfer coefficient for the free liquid surface due to the bubbling were calculated from the measured desorption rates and correlated as functions of the relative supersaturation of the solution and the liquid-phase Reynolds number.

Notes: The preparation of cellulose membranes from mixtures of cellulose, nonprotonic polar organic solvents, paraformaldehyde, and basic catalyst was studied. When dimethyl sulfoxide was used as casting solvent, the resulting membrane was the densest. An increase of an additional amount of triethyl amine used as basic catalyst gave denser membranes.

Notes: The adsorption of bromine onto powdery chitin, chitosan and cellulose was studied in an aqueous bromine-potassium bromide solution at 30°C. Chitosan was found to show an excellent ability of adsorbing bromine as well as iodine. The chitosan film also exhibited high ability of adsorbing bromine both in methanol and in aqueous potassium bromide solutions.

Notes: The adsorption of iodine on chitosan was studied by physico-chemical methods. The scanning electron micrograph measurements of chitosan-iodine adducts showed that iodine molecules were adsorbed uniformly on the chitosan film when the film was treated with aqueous iodine-potassium iodide solution. The thermogravimetric analysis of the adducts revealed that the loss in weight began at about 190°C, and that iodine molecules were thus well-complexed with chitosan. It was also found that the IR spectra of the chitosan films showed the amide I and amide II bands shifted to lower frequencies due to the iodine adsorption. The X-ray diffractometry of these adducts was further carried out, and it was found that the iodine adsorbed chitosan showed no crystalline pattern, different from that of the original chitosan which showed crystallinity in some extent. The chitosan recovered after desorbing iodine by immersion in aqueous sodium thiosulfate solution was amorphous.

Notes: Crown ether-modified polyethylenimines (PEI-CR) were prepared to elucidate their cation binding efficiency and selectivity by liquid-liquid and solid-liquid extraction methods. With alkali metal cations it was found that polyethylenimines containing benzo-15-crown-5 moieties (Ia and Ib) extracted all cations examined more efficiently than their monomeric analogs, especially in the cases of K+ and Rb+ cations. The solid-liquid extraction revealed clearly that the polymers complexed with K+ and Rb+ cations according to a 1:2 cation-to-crown stoichiometry. The high selectivities of the polymers for K+ and Rb+ were interpreted in terms of the favourable conformation of the polymer chain for the formation of intramolecular 1:2 complexes. On the contrary, these polymers bound alkali earth cations less effectively with low selectivities.

Notes: Poly(p-phenyleneterephthalamide) of high molecular weight was obtained when the polycondensation of terephthalic acid and p-phenylenediamine was carried out in N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) that contained dissolved CaCl2 and LiCl in the presence of pyridine. The molecular weight of the polymer obtained varied with the amount of pyridine relative to the metal salts and with the molar ratios of CaCl2 to LiCl, the maximum ηinh value of 4.5 being obtained under the conditions Py/(CaCl2 + LiCl) ≈ 2.5 (mol/mol), CaCl2/LiCl ≈ 1.2 (mol/mol), and LiCl + CaCl2 ≈ 4 g. Among the solvents tested, NMP was significantly effective for the reaction. Polycondensations of several combinations of other dicarboxylic acids and diamines were carried out with limited success.

Notes: The copolymerization of glycidylmethacrylate-methylmethacrylate-divinylbenzene in cyclohexane was studied as an example of crosslinking precipitation copolymerization. The resultant copolymer is fine spheroidal. The copolymerization proceeds acceleratively at first, then steadily, and gradually slows down. The larger the divinylbenzene concentration, the smaller is the copolymerization rate. Glycidylmethacrylate is preferentially incorporated in the copolymer.

Notes: The derivatives of poly(chloromethylstyrene) resin (PCMS) with N-methyl-N-carboxylmethyl-dithiocarbamate (1), N,N-di(β-hydroxyethyl)dithiocarbamate (2), N-methyl-N-carboxylmethylamino (3), and di(β-hydroxyethyl)amino (4) groups were prepared, and the metal ion reactivity of the polymer resins with these functional groups were investigated. Additionally, the effect of γ irradiation on the reaction with metal ion was also investigated. In the reaction of PCMS under the same conditions, the substitution ratio order is as follows: (2) 〉 (1) 〉 (4) 〉 (3). In the reaction of the resins with cupric ion, the reaction amount reached a maximum of 4.17 mequiv/g for resin (1) and 4.75 mequiv/g for (2). The polymers containing sulfur atom have a large reactivity toward metal ion in comparison to the polymers without sulfur atom. The reactivity of polymer (1) toward metal ions decreased in the following order: Ag(I) ≫ Cu(II)〉 Zn(II) ≳ Ni(II) ≳ Co(II). The other metal ions, except Ag(I) and Cu(II), hardly reacted with polymer (2). Thus, polymer (2) has a remarkable selectivity. It was also found that the reaction amount of polymers containing sulfur after γ irradiation is almost the same as that before γ irradiation.
