Notes: The kinetics of degradation of butyl rubber in two solvents, cyclohexane and toluene, was studied by two independent techniques: viscosity measurements and free-radical estimation as a function of DPPH consumed. The general shape of the rate curves in the two cases is similar, but not identical. The rate given by estimation of DPPH is faster than that obtained from solution viscosity data. This has been attributed to the inherent limitations of the two methods for the quantitative determination of the number of breaks occurring in the polymer molecules. The rate is also reduced as the viscosity of the solution medium is increased, which may be correlated with the reduction of the cavitation effect responsible for degradation. The degradation rates in two solvent media initially having the same viscosity were unequal. This may be due to different solvent-solute characteristics, which means that the viscosity and cavitation change to different extents in the two cases throughout the course of degradation. The limiting degree of Polymerization (DP)∞ obtained after prolonged irradiation has been found to be dependent on parameters such as intensity of irradiation, solution viscosity, and initial DP of the molecules.

Notes: Polystyrene has been chemically modified by Friedel-Crafts acylation reaction with trimellitic anhydride in the presence of anhydrous aluminium chloride as catalyst. The product has been characterized in respect of its structure and physicochemical properties by measuring its total capacity, thermal stability and the behaviour to pH metric titration. The thermal characteristics of the trimellitic anhydride modified polystyrene have been compared with the same for phthalic anhydride and pyromellitic dianhydride modified polystyrene in the light of their structural characteristics.

Notes: Possible conformations of two mannotetraoses and several milk oligosaccharides have been studied by an energy minimization procedure using semi-empirical potential functions. Changes in the terminal residue at the reducing end (cyclic to acyclic form) of these molecules do not affect the favored conformations of the remaining oligosaccharide moiety. However, differences in the overall shape of the native and reduced forms of the mannotetraose, mannose α(1-3) mannose α(1-2) mannose α(1-2) mannose are much less marked than between the native and reduced forms of lacto-N-tetraose. These differences are related to the effectiveness of the native forms as inhibitors of antibodies produced using synthetic antigens. Changes in the linkage of the residues at the nonreducing end of these molecules affect significantly the overall shape of these molecules. These differences also are related to their effectiveness as inhibitors. In the fucose-containing milk oligosaccharides the additional fucose residues only restrict the orientation of the backbone tetrasaccharide and do not push it into a totally new conformation. The fucose residues come on a surface of the molecule which is away from the region which may be important for binding. The present studies show that it is the overall shape of the molecule which is important in determining its inhibitory properties and give information as to how best to use the immune method for identification of unknown oligosaccharide sequences by specially prepared antibodies.

Notes: A series of polyesters containing conjugated diacetylenic groups in the polymer backbone were synthesized by interfacial condensation of 3,5-hexadiyne-1,6-diol and diacid chlorides of succinic, glutaric, adipic, azealic, sebacic, terephthalic, and isophthalic acids. The polyesters were characterized by their infrared and ultraviolet absorption spectra, elemental analysis, and viscosity measurements. Powder x-ray patterns indicated high degress of crystallinity. The polyesters were found to be highly photoreactive. The relative photoreactivities of the polyester films were determined by the adhesion method. Only small differences in the reactivity have been observed despite structural changes in the R group in the polymer backbone. Differential thermal analysis behavior of all polymers in the temperature range ambient to 300°C and isothermal behavior of HGI at two different temperatures have been studied.

Notes: In the presence of ZnEt2 the CoCl2-quinoline complex polymerizes NVC with a rate increasing with ZnEt2 and CoCl2-Q concentrations up to a certain concentration of ZnEt2 or CoCl2-Q, thereafter becoming independent of either. At a fixed concentration of ZnEt2 and CoCl2-Q the rate is second order with respect to NVC. The poly(NVC) obtained is freely soluble in benzene but leaves some insoluble fraction in methyl ethyl ketone, which has been characterized by 13C-NMR to be a stereoblock polymer. X-ray diffraction, IR, and thermal characteristics of the polymer have also been reported. [η] is virtually independent of monomer, in the concentration range 0.1-0.25 mol/L ZnEt2 and CoCl2-Q concentrations. Oxygen as an additive inhibits the polymerization. A cationic coordination mechanism has been proposed and appropriate rate and degree of polymerization equations have been suggested.
