    Notes: Abstract The intercalation compounds of trimethylphosphate (TMP) in graphite oxide (GO) have been synthezized. Two compounds have been characterized, corresponding to intercalation of one or two molecules of TMP, and have been characterized by gravimetric adsorption, X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy. Bonding between TMP and graphitic oxide takes place through hydrogen bonding with OH groups of the layered material.

    Notes: Abstract Optimal conditions for studying the ultrastructure of chromatin fibers of histone-containing spermatozoa in thin sections have been determined. Better results for preservation in sperm of the sea cucumber Holothuria tubulosa, have been found than in different frog species studied. The fine structure of chromatin fibers after different treatments was studied by computer methods. A clear superbead structure was found under all conditions which preserve the chromatin fibres. These have a diameter of 30 nm, with superbeads about 33 nm long. In the best preserved cases an additional periodicity of 11 nm along the fibres was found. There is no clear relationship of this periodicity with an eventual solenoidal structure of the chromatin fibers.

    Notes: Summary The compatibility of blends of poly(vinyl acetate) and poly(ethylene oxide) has been studied by rheological and thermo-optical analysis. Results from experiments point to the conclusion that there is extensive mixing between the segments of the two macromolecules in the blend. The interaction between the two polymers is manifested by a decrease in the melting point and a continuous decrease in viscosity with decreasing POE content in the mixture.

    Notes: Summary The viscometric and refractometric behaviour of poly (benzyl methacrylate) (PBM) in isobutyl methyl ketone (IMK) as a function of the temperature was studied. The viscometric relations in IMK and toluene by membrane osmometry and GPC at 25°C were established. The viscometric results show discontinuities in the intrinsic viscosity [η] in IMK and sharp changes in the conformational and thermodynamic parameters Kθ and B. The variation on the unperturbed dimensions of the polymer chain was attributed to a conformational transition. The influence of the side groups was analyzed. The conformational behaviour of this polymer was compared with the saturated corresponding poly (cyclohexyl methyl methacrylate).

    Notes: Summary Seventee white-rot and brown-rot fungi were screened for their ability to fractionate the lignocellulose structure of oat straw through the preferential attack of lignin or cellulose. Fermentations were carried out under solid-state conditions with 25 g quantities of straw. The fermented straw was analyzed for weight loss, Klason lignin loss and cellulase digestion. All the fungi attacked both lignin and carbohydrate fractions causing 3–28% weight losses and 26–34 g/100 g enzymatic digestibility. Polyporus tulipiferae, Phanerochaete chrysosporium and Polyporus sp. were tested for the effects of various nitrogen, phosphate and carbon levels, incubation temperatures and incubation time. The three fungi had different responses to these factors.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Ein neues Verfahren zur fluorimetrischen Bestimmung von Ga(III) mit 1-Hydroxy-2-carboxyanthrachinon bei pH 3,9 in wäßrigem Ethanol wurde ausgearbeitet. Die Fluoreszenz wurde bei 580 nm gemessen (Anregung bei 465 nm). Das Verfahren eignet sich für 50–500 ng/ml. Die Zusammensetzung der Komplexverbindung entspricht dem Verhältnis 1∶1.
    Notes: Summary The fluorescent chelate formed between 1-hydroxy-2-carboxy-anthraquinone and gallium(III) at pH 3.9 has been studied spectrofluorimetrically in an ethanol-water mixture (70/30% V/V). A new method for the fluorimetric determination of gallium(III) is described. The fluorescence is monitored at 580 nm (wavelength of excitation 465 nm) and the range of application of the method is between 50 and 500 ng ml−1. The stoichiometry of the complex has been found to be 1∶1.

Die Dauer der Inputimpulse kann mit einer Toleranz von wenigen Mikrosekunden einer willkürlich gehaltenen Periode über eine sehr lange Zeit hinweg eingestellt werden. Die Verwendung dieser Uhr ist nicht auf die Eichung von Mikrokalorimetern beschränkt, sondern kann vilefältiger Natur sein.
    Notes: Summary This paper describes a microcalorimeter heating circuit that is software controlled by a microcomputer operating as a square wave oscillator of very precisely known and programmable frequency and period. The duration of the input pulse of energy can be specified to within a few microseconds of an arbitrarily chosen period over an essentially infinite range. Use of the timer is, of course, not restricted to calibration of microcalorimeters but is general.
